Woo hoo! Another Antec bites the dust...

This one died a funny death, and it was caused by bad caps, so I had to post it.

    Antec SmartPower 350W

The PSU was making a whistle noise. The 12V was ALWAYS ON, so all of the fans in the PC were spinning and lights were lit up even though the PC was off.

The computer actually still worked, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before something fries, so I replaced the PSU and took this one apart.

Pictures will be up soon, but guess what the problem was..... a swollen Fuhjyyu on the secondary!!!! Go figure!
Rest in peace BFG. You were... a job...

Overhead shot. You can see the PSU is very clean inside. It's only a little over a year old.

Here's the cap that blew. Pretty wild to have a PSU that's only putting out 12V.... WHEN IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE OFF!!!

        C.S.I. Powersupply...

I scanned in real close to pick up any latent prints on the heat sink.
10:22 this morning, discovered gob o goo on heat sink B was a good clue.
Able to get one clear pinky print and ran thru fingerprint database.
11:38 Got a match, We now know who assembled this power supply, and from it's time of death, we know where and when.
Flew into HongKong on the red eye to meet with a Fergy Wong, ex Antec assembler.
During my interview with Wong I questioned her specifically about these caps.
No remorse whatsoever, started to state company policy.
So I flashed her the above picture asking, did you or did you not mount This cap in This PSU?
She broke down on my shoulder. Sobbed, I did. I had this very bad divorce and divorce is not even allowed, so I had to take drugs just to go to work.
The glue was hot, the caps were charged, and I just couldent handle the truth.
I forgave poor Fergy and Johnny, If your still reading this, she has offered to surrender herself to you. If anyone is still reading this...Then my job is done.
Next week: we find out Who put the whimpy power jack in my Lap.

Ugh, the electrolyte looks nasty. John, any idea if the newer Antec's are still using Fujjhyu's? This is shocking, given that the PSU is only one year old!

I was supposed to have a Trio Thursday but it didn't show up. UPS has no tracking. I think the Antec God's know my intentions.

funny, seems a bunch of people have had problems with their caps in antec psu's. the caps in my antec lasted for years under heavy use and much abuse.

yup its called inconsistent cap quality which is exactly what badcap manufacturers produce.

Yeah I have ~300W unit, that has room like a 69 cadillac in it compared to my True 430, like a toyota tercel...

The 300W has been running for over 6 ~ 7 years...but... it's been running in a slot 1 system under low load...

I've had really good luck with older Antec PSU's... I havent had any recent ones in my personal systems though. Curiosity is going to get the better of me, and I'll disect one of the 550watters that Antec donated to the capacitor showdown, just to see whats living in it.

Yes plz do, we should keep in mind though that they might have been specially built for the Badcaps forum, I mean why would Antec send PSU's with known badcaps to this forum...

Some mobo makers (I wont name them publicly) have done this in the past, made a batch run with "review examples" with excellent components and then after that they let loose the bean counters on them

I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...

Just did this on my 2021 13" MBP M1. Dust-Gate design flaw still present. Depending on cleanliness of the operation environment (often eating while using MB is probably the worst). Periodic cleaning is probably warranted.

Note this is quite challenging effort. One misstep will damage the LCD flex and render it useless. So take it to someone more experienced if uncertain.

While recaping Antec Earthwatts EA-380 I've broke one side of unknown smd element, it have no print, it's flatter and darker than smd capacitors on this board, shaped more like resistor but it's not resistor ofc. Unfortunetly the printed description was under it and element was glued to the board so I cant read/tell the letter before element number too. Have anyone any idea what it is? Maybe is there any diagram of this PSU?

                              Picking caps for Antec SU-380
                              by ajdrenter
In my search for a proper 5v heavy ATX power supply, I selected an old Antec SU-380 that I've had in storage for a long time. Opening the power supply reveals a couple bulged capacitors. I removed all the caps and made a map for myself. I found the datasheet for the PCE TUR series in this thread:
                              https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14159
It says these are general purpose, so I assume I can replace them with any general purpose capacitors, but I don't really know anything about power supply circuits or reading capacitor datasheets. Despite this, I've been shopping for replacements:...

                              Hello,

I'm currentlly in the process of trying my first power supply repair (really my first soldering project) and have some questions with regard to which capacitors to replace the bad ones.

The power supply is an Antec Smart Power SL300S ATX12V 300 watt.

I have successfully desoldered every capacitor from the board without destroying anything (I think) and I am currently in the process of choosing which caps to order. This is where I'd like a little community wisdom.

Now the capacitors inside are mostly Fuhjyyus (a forum favorite) with 1...
