Re: Now THAT is a sound card!
Why spend on a sound card like this? Use SPDIF out and get an external DAC, MUCH more potential.

Re: building a simple taser.
lol, i wish i could buy those, because to be honest i am curious about using electricity in an erotic sense. though this project is just for some simple shocks, because for some reason moderate shocks make me feel euphoric.
i have a camera flash device, but i think the diode is fried.
i have a couple 200v and 400v ceramic capacitors that should work nice since they are high voltage and low capacitance. but im not sure how to charge them, because im pretty sure a ccfl inverter outputs AC does...Last edited by WeStSiDePLaYa; 11-25-2006, 10:07 AM.

Re: building a simple taser.
i dont have access to anything like that.
approximately what total capacitance should i aim for?
im going to want high total voltage and relatively low capacitance, dont want to be dangerous....

building a simple taser.
im looking at building a simple taser for my personal use(i like being shocked )
im thinking of taking a ccfl inverter, attaching a small resistor as a dummy load so it doesnt work out, and then creating two charging terminals.
then having a seperate little box containing a few high voltage capacitors in series and parrallel, and then two prongs to press against the charging terminals,
to discharge it, i will place the prongs on my skin.
any ideas?

Re: Which primaries should i use?
so the older caps should still have enough perfomance in them to outperform the brand new caps?...

Which primaries should i use?
i have a choice of using 2 different types of primaries in my psu.
brand new 820uF panasonic ED series.
or a few year old pulls that are 1200uF panasonic FM series.
its for a mushkin HP-550 that already has its secondary recapped. its original primaries were 1200uF jenpo's or asia-x brand (cant recall 100%)

Re: PSU component identification
i dont see what could melt though, the sleeve doesnt melt, they burn and get stiff, the center is a ferrite core, and the wire is copper.

what does the resistor between ground and neutral do?

Re: The Great Capacitor Showdown - Rubycon vs Panasonic vs Samxon
ive been using the same antec true control, the original model, for years now, all the caps look fine, and ive run the system 24/7 pretty much, even through summers where my room temp touched 35c.
i still want to replace the caps on it though, as 3 or so years of heavy use must have taken its toll on them and reduced their perfomance.

yeah, im starting to think they are for when railfusion kicks in. this thing will need some tweaking....

adding ceramic caps in parrallel?
Im wondering if it is beneficial to add small SMT ceramaic capacitors on the output side of a psu in parrallel with the electrolytic capacitors. I have read that this may extend their lifespan as they will not need to deal with as much high frequency ripple current.
i mean its an easy enough thing to do, but is it worth it?

Re: The Great Capacitor Showdown - Rubycon vs Panasonic vs Samxon
i think some chemicons would be nice to try.
i really like chemicons because they perform well but cheaper and easier to get than rubys and nichicons.
BUT:
unless these boards are all run with the exact same psu, with exact same componets and settings, the results will be almost completely useless.
as it is there are a large amount of variables that dont seem to be taken into account here, which will void all results.
so unless...

Re: Beefing up the HP-550
sorry, they are variable resistors. two small single turn pots, im unsure of the resistance.
and yes, it seems this "rail fusion" thing is all BS. there is only one 12v rail until it hits that little pcb you see mounted to the heatsink, and then it splits them there.
EDIT: where abouts in SK are you? i used to live way down south about 10 minutes from the usa border in a small small town of willowbunch, and then coronach....

Beefing up the HP-550
Well I recently won the Mushkin HP-550 psu from XS a while back. its an amazing looking unit, but its built by top power and is lacking in perfomance.
It has all "asia X" brand capacitors, which I will be replacing with(thanks to arrangement with Trodas ) with
UCC
10v 3900uF KZE
16v 3900uF KZE
200v 1200uF SMQ (x2)
1. any comments on cap selection?
i picked them due to their relatively low ESR and highest ripple current while still being decently priced.
2. This psu also seems to...

Re: simple power help.
got the figured out a few minutes after i posted it.
and i didnt have the cash for fan controllers, so i used a pci bracket switch from a ccfl inverter.
and yes i know im using alot of power for my fans. i got some big fans, and lots of 80mm.
but this is running off a secondary psu.
and to the person who suggest running them off the mobo headers. are you f'ing nuts?! please dont ever recomemend that to others again. running the fans i am using off a header will fry them. i even stated i had high ...

Re: Would just recapping solve my problem - desoldered MOSFETs
i dont think recapping will fix your problem,
i dont think the failed caps caused the fets to overheat.
i think the over heated fets caused the caps to fail, if its hot enough to desolder itself, its way too hot for caps.
so it appears something else is the problem, and recapping and resoldering the fets is just setting yourself to fail again soon.
