But I've never used that, nor do I have an immediate use for it so.....
I think I'm stuck in the mud on this one. Might have to count my blessings with four conductors and USB 2.0 speeds.

Ok... I looked at the USB 3.0 pin out and it looks like it uses the standard +5V, gnd, D+, D- like USB 2.0, and better speeds can be accomplished due to the better controller, but there's also the differential pins, 2 x RX and 2 x TX to obtain even better speeds. So it certainly seems like full USB 3.0 speds are out of the question.
And certainly, since the data isn't going to be shielded from power, I'm only going to see 1.5Mps speeds at the highest, which is pretty pathetic.

I know USB 2.0 uses four wires, but two of those wires are DC power and ground: +5VDC, Ground, data + and data -. USB 2.0 operates with two wires if you remotely power the device. For example: When we did Phobos at BFG, the iPod dock on top was only wired up to the USB controller with two wires, D+ and D-. The port's power came from the +5VSB of the PSU. This allowed the docked iPod or iPhone to continue getting charged even when the PC is "off" and in stand by.

Oh.. here some important variables that might make or break this project....
I need to be able to supply 10 to 15W of power (5VDC @ 2 to 3A). And the data could be as high as 3 to 5 Gb per second. Think USB 3.0. Essentially, I'm trying to make a powered USB hub that can provide its own power when plugged into the wall, or pull power from the PC when the hub is not plugged in.

I'm wanting to do something that seems simple on the surface, but I can't figure out why its so dang hard to find information on when I'm looking for it. I don't know what IC to use, what kind of components... I don't know where to even start....

Funny thing is that the data sheet says this transistor pairs up with the 2SD1435K. Maybe in typical applications, but in this load tester I can't find any 2SD1435K's!!

Need help finding an LF Power Amp for my load tester
I've been looking all over for a Hitachi 1031(K) low frequency power amplifier for the ol' Sun Moon SM-268. It burned out and now the thing pops any PSU you plug into it. Stupid little $2 part and I can't find one.
Any help would be appreciated, alternate part numbers, source even if it's in China, etc.

For the record: I never had the problems with Deskstars that everyone reports either. Had four with no problems what so ever. About seven years too, I'd have to say. Then again, cheapest PSU I've ever used was an Enermax or Antec.
I hear some people complaining about Seagate SATA drives and high failure rates. Again, no problems here. And I deployed about 300 of them as voice mail servers with RAID1. Only one failed within a year and 2 after a year's time. The...

There are only three primary caps on the OCZ. As PITA as it was, I had the top half off and it was clear to see there was nowhere eles for any caps to hide.
Unfortunately, that review was 1.5 years ago and that unit long gone so I can't take any more pics for you.

True. It may very well be that "bad caps" didn't even kill these boards. But you don't know the whole story either. There is far more anecdotal evidence beyond "the PSU has excessive ripple output". I'll give you more background....
At TCWO we had barebones systems that had components in them that we already qualified. Motherboard, PSU, etc. Sold these units for years. Never had a problem. RMA rate on either motherboard or PSU was under 1%.. EASILY.

I'm going to disagree with kikkoman on this one.
Your statements are full of generalizations. Most PSU's are full of crap caps? That's why PSU's fail? Wrong.
I used to do RMA for TCWO (3 years) and ASI (two years) and most PSU's did not come back with bad caps.
Actually, most PSU's die due to fan failure (and then typically whatever fails due to the fan failure, which typically isn't cap related either). Of course, the fan is the part of a PSU with the shortest MTBF and it's MTBF is never calculated into the PSU's...

Of course. For example, I'm looking at Samxon and will likely use Jun Fu as a back up. As it is Samxon seems to be able to do better volume than a lot of suppliers, so there may never be a need to use the Jun Fu's.
Yeah. The behaviour of caps on motherboards is entirely different than in PSU's. Linuxguru explained it rather eloquantly somewhere here in the forums, but I can't find it right now.
Actually, most caps used in PSU's are either 2000 hours @ 85°C or 1000 hours @ 105°C....
