          Re: extreme stupidity by customer

Some of them are user error or ignorance. But other issues, like scratching the board, because heatsink clip snaps when it shouldn't, is related to manufacturer using wrong type of steel for HS clip. For example Globalwin used cheap heatsink clips to reduce costs due to the main heatsink being expensive single piece milled, I had to buy a Coolermaster heatsink, whose clip was about three times as heavy thick steel. To hold in the Globalwin heatsink.

Quite often manufacturers get things very very wrong. Recently I read how a 8800 cooler doesn't not fit 8800 and actually destroys them. And this can make those not in the know, that only assume manufacturers know what day it is, to make errors and look silly, when they're not always.

looking at the mobo section there; you know, cpu heatsink design is really a disaster, so no wonder users destroy them.
they should just provide solution with 4 screws that would secure the heatsink and end there.
their attempts to do it all with hands just result in forcing those mobos and plastics beyond limits.
so for that i don't blame people, but designers.

socket 775 mobo with heatsink installed out of the box just looks rediculously bended, esp. on matx boards...

i4004; Yea, like the Xeon boards
4 screws going through the mobo into the chassi steel plate
Does not become much more simple or safe than that

Wonder why not all boards just use that?
But maybe they like RMA's :P

didn't know somebody actually uses that system, but it just makes so much more sense than crappy clips and plastics...

i guess 4 screws propell the price over the roof...stupid cheap fucks...

                    Re: extreme stupidity by customer

At one time when P4 just came on, some decent cases had 4 threaded holes for the P4 heatsink bracket. Even Asus once included a steel plate stuck to the bottom of the board in the area of P4.

Good AM2/3 now have plate on bottom under the socket.

775 socket boards rarely have the plate. Some third-party good heatsinks include this.

                    Cheers, Wizard

Haha that to me looked like insect fecal deposits .

Don't you love how people think that twisting braided wire together then electrical taping them make a solid connection?

Soldering or crimp connectors are the ONLY way to go. I prefer soldering and heatshrink tubing for a nice polished look.

I can't stand the heatsink clips either. I seem to waste more time fiddling with them. Than I would just fastening 4 screws.

If you want to see a real PITA heat sink clamp. Look no further than the Xbox 360s it uses an X-Clamp which snaps into a grove on each of the 4 dowels extending from the CPU cooler. Torx screws later fasten into the dowels which secures the mobo to the metal EMI casing as evidenced by the holes.

It is the most poorly designed crap I have ever seen.

Not to mention I'm sure countless people have torn off SMT components rendering their boards useless. By trying to improperly remove these clamps by prying. Which almost every wrench turner online says to do.

When in essecence you are supposed to insert a screwdriver at the tip of each corner between the dowel and the clamp and push outward. Releasing the claw from the groove.

                            oh yes i would.
i have seen much worse than this.
like the guy who's dog chewed the power supply for his new at the time toshiba libretto.

nobody was able to keep a straight face!
i know its not the best thing to do in the presence of a customer but i laughed my ass off!
or the owner of a big machine shop who i told several times the switch he was in danger of sticking his fingers in was live with 480 3ph and he was going to touch the live side.
he argued with me telling me he had turned it off till i told him to step aside and turned it on.
when the hydraulic pumps came on his face went white!

... Wow. That's some amazing logic there.

I got a phone call from an acquaintance who was buying ram for his computer, so he absent-mindedly popped it out of the machine to look at it. He immediately realized he shouldn't have done that.
But Windows didn't crash - it gave him a "memory size reduced" message and kept running. I found that part fascinating.

Problem is, that message made him think it was okay, like the RAM was hot swappable or something. So then he decided to put it back in. Of course it fried immediately and burned out everything. Such a shock he didn't have all the pins lined up perfectly when they touched.

Fortunately he couldn't see my face, but I really struggled to not sound like I was laughing at him. I'm not sure I succeeded.

The problem is any idiot thinks he can fix computers. It seems people have a hard time figuring out their capabilities. The problem escalates when they ask the equally inept sales clerk/friend/coworker for advice, thinking he knows best.
