Re: shorted celeron cpu?
I almost forgot... Use 1500uf 16v instead of 1200uf. All I usually find locally on 16v 105ºC is 1500uf

Re: shorted celeron cpu?
Too bad they don't carry the caps you need. The way I see it, you have three choices:
1) Scrap broken motherboards or power supplies to get proper caps.
2) Use general purpose (that is, not low esr) caps. Just make sure they're rated for 105ºC. I've used them ocassionaly, mostly for Pentium-PII-PIII motherboards, and usually I've been lucky. I prefer to use general purpose caps than to choose option number one. I've fixed a couple of PIV motherboards this way, too. I don't know how much the PIV mothers will last this way, tough....Last edited by jpdoe; 12-26-2009, 11:42 AM.

Re: shorted celeron cpu?
If you live in Buenos Aires, you can see if you find proper caps on a place I've heard of. I don't know for sure if this place carry proper capacitors (I don't live in BsAs). I've found out about them via google.

Something to be aware of: the motherboard might have a shorted chipset. With the motherboard on, check if the southbridge is too hot.Re: shorted celeron cpu?<br /> <br ...Aires, you canLast edited by jpdoe; 12-23-2009, 04:24 PM.

Re: Flakey Bestec ATX-250 12Z?
Try changing the VMM battery. My VMM gives wrong high readings when his 9v battery is too low.

Thanks, Momaka. I've been wondering about those caps for a while now.

Ok. I'll give it a try. It will be a good way to practice soldering.

Re: GQ 3151 w/ Macron model MPT-251 PS
Hi all.
I'm trying to learn which of the small caps present on most PSUs are worth recapping.
Would someone be so kind as to explain which caps is Momaka aiming at with the specs he gave? (22uf or 47uf, 25v or 50v). Are those the filter caps present on the 5vsb feedback loop Everell mentioned on another thread?

Re: What a Noob!
I have too many to pick just one.
But out of the top of my head, I had a teacher that liked to babble instead of teaching the assigned subjects. He once commanded us to watch "The net" movie. Apparently it portraited technical computing matters very realisticly, and that made it a learning opportunity too good to ignore.

Re: Logisys 575W
"KEERDA ELECTRONICS FACT0RY"...
I've seen a couple of these PSUs. On one of them, the PCB had "ATX-1000" silkscreened; the other had "ATX-2000" on it. The most obvious difference between them was that the former had only one capacitor per each output (5v, 12v, 3.3v), while the latter had two. There was no inductance between them... the output filters consisted simply of one capacitor in the first case, and of two in parallell in the second.
Both had a resistance dangerously close to the capacitor filtering the 5vsb......

Re: soyo dragon+ and dragon ultra
I'm no expert, but it sounds like a 5vsb problem.
You could give another another PSU a try.
Or you could try to find out which motherboard caps are filtering the 5vsb. This could be done with a DMM.

Re: Benq FP767 PS caps
Great walkthrough, PlainBill.
I've always wondered which is the easiest way to test the bridge rectifier.
From reading these forums, I've gathered that it's a good idea to desolder one terminal of a diode in order to test the bridge.
If we number the diodes on the next figure from 1 to 4, from top to bottom, which terminal should I desolder?
Thanks...

Re: MSI Wind Netbook
It's quite likely there's a linux UI that imitates a Mac, but I doubdt your Mac apps will run on linux.
If you're interested in trying linux on your MSI wind, I know a guy at work that uses ubuntu on it.

Re: Sony VAIO PCG-SR31K Subnotebook
You're welcome.
The easy way to deal with drivers to try to backup the ones present on the broken install. This is something I don't do (I like to use up to date versions), but I know several techies that do it. There's several programs available. Driver Genius is one of them. If the OS is broken, I've seen BartPE boot cds that include this kind of application.
What's the PCI ID of the devices?

Re: Sony VAIO PCG-SR31K Subnotebook
I've dealt with rebranded / broken PCI IDs a couple of times. It involved editing the driver .ini files to include the PCI ID of the device in question. If you upload the .ini and provide me with the PCI ID, I'll do it for you. It simply consists of adding a line to the .ini
The hard part is figuring out which device it actually is the one installed.

Re: Laptop ID
Hi, NxB
The problem with that kind of thinking is that it would cost you a customer. So it comes to you to decide whether the future income offsets the additional work needed to fix the problem.
I guess it boils down to people's expectations. The auto mechanic's clients are acostumed to be charged that way. The PC repairman's clients usually don't understand the concept of "work in progress" and freak out when you tell them that the software gave up on you while you worked on it, and that you have to reinstall windows and charge them accordingly....Last edited by jpdoe; 04-23-2009, 06:39 PM.
