you forgot the Fujitsu MPG-series of HDDs..
the MPG series is the reason why Fujitsu went out of the HDD business (for desktop 3,5" drives.. AFAIR they still produce 2,5" notebook HDDs for OEMs)

oh and BTW.. i still own one of those IBM Deathstar (or Desastar) HDDs...

    20GB DTLA-305020

was running in a server 24/7. SMART reports a power on count of almost 4 years (HDD is dated Feb. 2001). still working fine, but horribly loud (spindle motor).
but all 40GB drives i got from the same guy were dead.. as soon as you tried to write something.. "click click.. scratch scratch scratch scratch scratch"..)
for some weird reason all 40GB ones could be formatted (full format, not quick format) without any problem.. but that doesn't help anyways if you can't read or write something on/from them

edit: i wrote 3 years instead of 4

Same here, though mine is 20GB DTLA-307020. Still running strong, although from time to time it goes "click-beep" (same noise as when it shuts down), and after that it resumes back to normal. If I hear it do that, though, I shut it down immediately, because otherwise I get more of these beeps (I read a website long ago that said that those beeps indicated buffer corruption).

@ Scenic: At what temperature is yours running? I get 43C on the hotter days in the summer and 40C in the winter. However, I'm pretty sure those temperatures and the random clicks are due to the crappy Powmax I had in there before (Fuhjyyu TNR on +12v, and bulged Jun Fu on +5v ). Now I have a Tt TR2 430W, but I haven't tried that HD due to the noise it makes (like you said, really loud spindle motor).

Thanks for all of the input. I was hoping that this drive would be usable after I replace the PCB, but from what it sounds like, that's not the case. I have no data on the drive to capture, so I ended up taking the drive apart, and I'm gonna list the PCB on Ebay, as-is, untested.

On a side note, I attached one of the platters to my rear view mirror with some fishing line. I'll take it down in a couple of days, I just want to get a few puzzled looks from somebody, anybody! Oh, and I'm gonna try to attach power and ground to the motor to make the platters spin.

        Work is slow.

@ Scenic: Sorry, I barely heard of Fujitsu MPG/MPF fiasco: Fujitsu was a rare hdd brand in italian consumer products [Fujitsu-Siemens is stronger on workstations and servers, not desktops], better remembered for Scsi units.

Is it one of the Hungary-made ones?

All the ones I came across that are made in Hungary, have a loud spindle motor and is slow to spin up. But, the ones I had were early 1999.

Also what worried me was that they seem to have an issue with the "Spin up retries" (or similar) SMART attribute.

Non of those problems with my October 22, 1999 Phllippines-made Deskstar 12 GB.
It spins up faster and is quieter. Also, a fast HDD for it's time!

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
                    by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

Evaluating Mechanical Hard Drives SMART Data in Linux (Ubuntu) Using the Disks Utility.
                    by abajor
I've gotten into the habit of Looking at peoples Mechanical Hard drives with a Ubuntu thumb drive to boot their system.
I understand the raw values are not really uniform between manufacturers, but I have noticed that high seek and read error raw values at the very least correlate to a drive that is going to have sub par access time, and extremely slow OS booting.
The odd thing is I've often seen very high seek and read error rates on drives with fairly low on time.

Does anybody have any other takes on evaluating smart data? I've used Crystal Disk Info, It seems to present...

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
                    by federalhouse
                    Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                    **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

                    **What I've Tried So Far:**

what to do with faulty hard drives?
                    by ChaosLegionnaire
i have several dead/bricked (not detected, doesnt show up or making constant clicks of death) and faulty bad sector hard drives. im moving house soon and need to get rid of some dead weight.

i thought of selling them for parts or not working but they are quite heavy and shipping each drive internationally via local post is US$23 each. im using some of the drives as gym strength training dumbells by putting 4 of them in a box to make a 3kg dumbell. but since im moving i cant carry the deadweight with me. any ideas what to do with them that is cost-effective for ppl like me...

Best Overall Amazing Back Up Setup? 1K-4K Budget! Software + Hardware? Help!
                    by NeedsPractice
I remember a lot of people before when my hard drive failed told me that I could do a couple of amazing things with backing up data. What stuck out is two things...

                    1. Software that will backup your data live via a cloud solution or over the internet without having a corporate cloud product.
                    2. Get a storage tower with hard drives and load them up.

What I mean is there software out there that you can install on your computer. You tell it which data you want backed up. Lets say your main PC with (2) hard drives and (8) hard drives connected to it via a tower....
