I know ssd been out for a while, but Im cheap for the most part. I get tons of parts surpless as I recycle dead hardware for gold recovery.
Well finally started adopting ssd use. I was sadly discouraged when I bought a few nimbus drives off a seller used on ebay and they failed in a days. I mean just gone, no data access.
So stopped. Then decided to buy two crucial m4 for 50 ship. They were glitching bad random bsod and crashing. Or just locking up for no reason.
So got my money back on the nimbus drives and returned them. The other seller told me keep the crucial drives and just refunded.
I was about ready to junk the crucials till I did some research and found a firmware update. They still had the original firmware from factory so I updated them.
Now they work flawless. So decided to put one in a mini hpp for a car gps and the other one my old work laptop I got for 5 bucks for salvage in 2013.
Man the HP laptop that is close to 10 years old runs flawless and snappy with the ssd. And the mini that is 5 years is just as snappy as well.
So guess I will at least buy them for laptop, netbook use.
Still dont see a point for a desktop as a raid card with two 10k barracudas sata2 seem faster LOL!
So thats my opnion, take it as you wish!
It all depends on your use. I mainly do office work on my portables and the desktop runs the tv for blue ray and some older games. So your use might warrant different results.
But since I get boxes and boxes of hard drives for 75c lb, half good, I couldnt justify cost of ssd till now. And only to make older portables little more snappy! Plus I noticed battery life is up by a hour or more with the ssd too.
Yes I do feel guilty I got the SSD drives to work from second selelr and he refunded me, but I still had to "fix" them. And had no clue the firmware fix would indeed fix them till a few days later.
Which I why every laptop por whatever sold on ebay is updated before it leaves my house. So people dont go through what I did!!
Just my friendly contribution of the day!
A little side not. I feel sick to ym stomach. I remember buying a brand western digital 320gb Sata out of Best Buy for 125 back in 2006. I needed it now for my office work and couldn't wait for shipping. Now you can get 128gb ssd for 60 new. Man tech really depreciates faster than cars and homes...just WOW!
