    ssd and old laptops

I know ssd been out for a while, but Im cheap for the most part. I get tons of parts surpless as I recycle dead hardware for gold recovery.

Well finally started adopting ssd use. I was sadly discouraged when I bought a few nimbus drives off a seller used on ebay and they failed in a days. I mean just gone, no data access.

So stopped. Then decided to buy two crucial m4 for 50 ship. They were glitching bad random bsod and crashing. Or just locking up for no reason.

So got my money back on the nimbus drives and returned them. The other seller told me keep the crucial drives and just refunded.

I was about ready to junk the crucials till I did some research and found a firmware update. They still had the original firmware from factory so I updated them.

Now they work flawless. So decided to put one in a mini hpp for a car gps and the other one my old work laptop I got for 5 bucks for salvage in 2013.

Man the HP laptop that is close to 10 years old runs flawless and snappy with the ssd. And the mini that is 5 years is just as snappy as well.

So guess I will at least buy them for laptop, netbook use.

Still dont see a point for a desktop as a raid card with two 10k barracudas sata2 seem faster LOL!

So thats my opnion, take it as you wish!

It all depends on your use. I mainly do office work on my portables and the desktop runs the tv for blue ray and some older games. So your use might warrant different results.

But since I get boxes and boxes of hard drives for 75c lb, half good, I couldnt justify cost of ssd till now. And only to make older portables little more snappy! Plus I noticed battery life is up by a hour or more with the ssd too.

Yes I do feel guilty I got the SSD drives to work from second selelr and he refunded me, but I still had to "fix" them. And had no clue the firmware fix would indeed fix them till a few days later.

Which I why every laptop por whatever sold on ebay is updated before it leaves my house. So people dont go through what I did!!

Just my friendly contribution of the day!

A little side not. I feel sick to ym stomach. I remember buying a brand western digital 320gb Sata out of Best Buy for 125 back in 2006. I needed it now for my office work and couldn't wait for shipping. Now you can get 128gb ssd for 60 new. Man tech really depreciates faster than cars and homes...just WOW!

If you think that's bad I remember paying $300 for a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black back in 2008 (one of the first 1TB 7200rpm consumer HDDs).

For SSDs I've actually done the opposite of you, upgrading my desktop to an SSD first back in 2011 since I could use a small SSD as a boot drive, and still run a second Mechanical HDD, when SSDs were still relatively expensive, I've had an SSD in my Laptops since 2014 when 240GB/256GB SSD prices came down to what I thought was reasonable.

My work Laptop (provided by my employer) has an SSD as well but I wish it was bigger, it only has a 128GB drive which presents space issues at times (I have to go in every few weeks to clean up "junk" as I never have more than 10GB free), a 240GB/256GB would be perfect, we have NAS storage, but some things need to be able to be accessed quickly or when off-line necessitating local storage as well. Overall we have had SSDs deployed in large numbers for the last 2 years in HP Elitebook 840s and Lenovo Thinkpad T450s (which is what I have), and have had a much lower failure rate than we did with mechanical HDDs (granted this equipment was purchased new and is replaced every 3 years or many of the aging issues with SSDs never arise, and it gets moved/bumped around a lot shortening the life of HDDs), the HPs have had a bunch of other issues (mainly overheating/bad motherboards) which is why we switched to Lenovo, but not many problems with the SSDs.

Sounds like you got some drives with the crap SandFail panic lock bug along with other problems.

I just got bit by it too. 120gb chronos SSD with the Shitforce controller.... Yet another thing to blame on anti piracy BS.

This is known as the 5000 hour bug, not related to Sandforce btw goontron, the Crucial M4 uses a Marvell controller...

SSD vs traditional hds is not something to compare . I've seen the differences by direct testing through programs , even a sata2 with 64 cache won't come near by half ..One recent program with a visual display failed to contain an SSD rpm within its compatible range , lol ..
I always asked myself why every technology within computerized world still work on a hovering needle and mechanical rotated plates . I was even sure that scientists reached a dead point in this domain (like in big bang and beyond) , so it's a relief with this breakthrough . And yet , like every new technology , there are some fears . Prices incredibly high , life span isn't yet credited for sure , Data recovery is surely another big problem , but speed is something real .

referring to the nimbus. He never got as far as panic locking, But that's just one on a list.

I have an SSD in my main computer and it boots in 3 seconds after the P.O.S.T. stuff... AFTER A MOTHERBOARD TRANSPLANT HELLO!? Went from an H81 chipset to a Z97 chipset and it still boots no prob.
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

                  Re: ssd and old laptops

For many people a 5 year old laptop with an SSD is a better option than a brand new laptop with a mechanical HDD.

For the user that just checks their email, writes a few Word docs, and does all their work online, a 120GB or 240GB will be more than sufficient.

Heck, I just boguht a cheap i3 laptop yesterday and the first thing I did was replace the 500GB WD Blue with a 120GB Kingston SSD. Performs amazingly

A quality SSD will be more reliable than a mechanical HDD - banging their laptop around will not cause data loss. Sure, when SSDs die, they usually just die, rather than failing slowly with bad sectors, etc. But statistically if you look at failure rates as a % SSDs are far better than HDDs.

Every model of SSD is cheaper than the last. For example, the Kingston V300 240GB costs $63.99 on Amazon right now, while the new Kingston UV400 120GB costs just $59.99.

Sure, the price per GB is much higher, but time is money, and it's 2016 - you can buy a 3-4TB external drive (that will be plenty fast with USB 3.0) for like $100, and there's also cloud storage if you want to take your files with you.

Well here is a option to make your own ssd out of old camera flash cards. Very interesting, kinda want try it. Tf which is the same as micro sd and it automatically puts the sims in raid. So even cheaper option. I have bags of sd cards from yard sales. I should try it and post some results....Plus you can get a case for like 10 bucks so it would mount in a lappy.

RAID 1, if one disk fails, the data are OK & Intel RST RAID1 reads data simultaneously from both drives so that the reading speed is as RAID0...

It would be interesting to see real world speeds vs their claimed Max of 260MB/s read and 225MB/s but at $35 with the case you're half the price of a Samsung Evo.

I'd take Samsung over Kingston, Samsung use their own flash, Kingston buys from whoever is cheaper.
SSD or hard drive, the data should be backed up, so the reliability shouldn't be an issue anyway. SSDs are perfect for laptops, as they aren't susceptible to the bumps as hard drives are.

That would be a awsome ssd if indeed accurate. And Im sure the sims have the same life expectancy as the ssd chips. Plus those are class 10 which is rated high speed for 1080p vid recording.....hmmm

Do you really want to commit your time, money and data to this controller? http://www.sage-micro.com/chip-5.html

                            $49 for 64GBx5 micro sd
$25 for card with controller of unknown quality
                            £10 case
$84 total for around a 300GB of ghetto storage unknown max speed and relaibility vs
                            $92 Samsung Evo 850 Sata3 240GB 540MB/s read and 520MB/s write

Other SSDs are cheaper, I just like the Samsungs.

Its a toy, something to play with and investigate. Its like the old ide to cf adapters, they worked well. If im wrong, its a small drop in the bucket. I do ok. I blew over 5 grand at a casino last few months, so 80 bucks to gamble is nothing,. I just want to play and its the curiosity factor as wow factor. Plus as I said I already have some micro sd cards as i buy tons off old tech for salavage. So really not going to cost me much. I just threw those cards in in case someone else wants to try it.
