    Cleaning newer motherboards

I'm used to cleaning socket 478 and older boards but today I had my first LGA775 board come in and it seriously needs a wash (It smells of smoked hickory and burning wallpaper).
I would do it but I have no idea what the water would do to the CPU socket. Am I still safe to wash the board normally or is there something else I have to do?

I don't think water will cause any big problems. But just don't blast water at the socket because it will bend the pins. I think other members of this forum will answer your question more better than I can.

Well, apart from overly sensitive pins i think there is no difference with any other elektronics.
But sure, no brush, no pressed air only a gentle rins with preferably demineralized water. after the Simple Green procedure.

Use my method in the other thread. Use an air compressor to blow water out from inside the socket and other crevices. I've done it to a few, no problems.

          +1
treat it like any other except use care with the delicate socket.
i have used various solvents and a soft brush to remove thermal paste though.
see plenty of 775 boards given up for dead due to socket contamination.
          arctic silver being the worst.
had one last week where the tk caps spilled their guts out the bottoms and drowned the socket.it cleaned up just fine.
iirc it was a biostar board and was about a year old.
had some 560@4v lytics popped around the socket .
          it got polys there!

When you need to clean water out of crevices (as in cleaning up from the clean-up) put some isopropyl alcohol (preferably 90-91%) into a spray bottle and flush it out with the spray. The alcohol evaporates fast, carries the water away with it, doesn't leave any residue, and the force of the spray isn't likely to damage anything.

Make sure you have very good ventilation.
It's easier to hit the target when you only see one board there.

if you have a PnP cap around ... you may put it back to the socket and start washing,
minimizing the damage of the pins inside =)
