    Windows 95 modem question

This is probably the wrong place to ask this, but here goes.

I have an old Dell Latitude D505 laptop, which is missing it's internal hard drive. While I look for a new one online, I have (with a little help from USB emulation) set up Windows 95 on an external hard drive as a temporary fix. While the setup works, and Windows works like a dream, I need to have some functionality from my modem (I have my reasons. ), which is a Conexant D480 MDC V.92 modem. While looking up drivers, the only ones I could find came from Dell and worked only with Windows 2000 or later. I now ask: does anyone happen to know where I could get a driver for Windows 95, or how to hack it into working, just short of writing my own driver?

If you are wondering, if I try to install anything later than Windows 98, it detects my USB hard drive and just stops, because at that time (and even now) setup won't let you install to a USB device. This laptop supports (*barely*) Windows 7, but I'd say Windows XP is the latest possible I could install, but even ol' reliable (XP) craps out upon realizing I'm installing to a USB device.
    Cheers!

There aren't any Linux distros that I know of that will install to a USB device (or I would be using it ), but I will keep it in mind.

I did check the Conexant webpage, but they gave me the same as Dell.
      Cheers!

I had a Fedora Core 5 DVD and a set of Red Hat 9 CDs on hand and neither of them worked, although I should probably get something that isn't from 2006 :/.

Will try Fedora 12. Maybe that will be a slight bit more up to date.

Edit: so that you know what I'm working with, this laptop has a Pentium M processor (with SpeedStep, 600MHz/1.5 GHz) with 512 MB RAM. Fedora 22 (latest last I checked- I prefer Fedora/Red Hat) definitely will have a hard time with that.

In case Linux doesn't work out, please respond in case there exists a driver, if not I suppose I will use Linux. In either case I do prefer to use Linux, however.

it looks as if windows 95 drivers are abundant for this thing.... What do you need the modem for anyway? BBSes?

Networking. I have two sites with modems that need to be connected, and do not own a domain so I cannot set up a VPN to connect them. That, and it's a relatively easy solution to networking two physical locations.

The drivers I seem to pull up every time unzip on Windows 95, but the DLLs the setup programs require to run say they need Win 2000 or greater. I also tried right clicking the .INF files and clicking install, but that didn't work at all from what I can tell.

I will try, but it will probably do the same thing XP did.

Or I can use Linux, but it is possible that this is a Winmodem, which doesn't work natively with Linux, etc. You would think they just have one standard, but that would make too much sense.

unless they changed something this time, fedora needs a gig of ram to run the damned installer.

                            try the new openSuSE

                                    Re: Windows 95 modem question

Just a heads up in case you do feel the need to go with Linux for this, yours is a PCI modem (also commonly called a Winmodem) that interfaces with the CPU buss and does not use an actual serial port, the software (driver) which is OS dependent (ie Windows) enumerates it as a pseudo-serial device and will not work under Linux. There are limited work-arounds for some Winmodems in Linux but I don't believe the Conexant/Rockwell is one of them. If that is the case and you still wish to use Linux then acquire an external serial port modem.

Edit: You may also consider getting and ext modem regardless of what OS you use, as all the OSes have serial port support without the need of additional drivers. They also use less CPU resources.

there was a rockwell winmodem driver for linux, but it was comercial!
                                      maybe it's free now.

I'm finding nothing currently available, but as I recall (it was many years ago) the Rockwells in question had a UART (serial port) chip on the card, essentially it's a PCI serial port card with a modem built onto it. Current info is hard to find about that but here's a starting point if interested:
