• Re: ASUS RT-N66U Teapo replaced

I would be very surprised if the startup cap isn't under all that shmoo.

  • Re: Bad caps? Phillips HiFi

I would attempt to resolder with a fine tipped iron... the key words here are fine tipped. Another option is to bodge on a through-hole component with the same rating and make sure it doesn't short with anything. Shorted components will create a pile of burnt-silicon-smelling rubbish.Re: Bad caps? Phillips HiFi

The drive can be formatted and partitioned under DOS and Win95 though. My only other option is to turn emulation off and not have it mounted at all.

It is going to simply be a development machine, no more no less. I just need a feasible OS (and Windows 95 is just too old.).

  • Re: Linux Installation to USB

The only clue to how it mount USB media is an option to turn USB emulation on or off.

I may try Lubuntu, as suggested by SteveNielsen. The only requirement I have is that it has to install to USB media, I do not have an internal HDD for this laptop.

  • Re: Windows 10 "accidental upgrades"

Don't worry, it'll be fixed in the next service pack. (~ a year from now)

  • Linux Installation to USB

So I have the old D505 laptop, and have determined that the latest Linux I can install on it is Fedora Core 5. Finding installation media was no problem, but I need to be able to install it to USB. Every time I try to install, drivers load, media checks out OK, asks for my keyboard type and then I get "no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems." This happens in both the graphical and text-mode installers.

My prblem is that if it thought the USB hard disk was nonexistant it wouldn't have loaded the usb-storage driver at startup and would have...

Thanks for the help, guys. I will try to find the Linux driver if the Windows one does not work.

  • Re: Windows 95 modem question

I will try, but it will probably do the same thing XP did.

Or I can use Linux, but it is possible that this is a Winmodem, which doesn't work natively with Linux, etc. You would think they just have one standard, but that would make too much sense.

  • Re: Windows 95 modem question

The drivers I seem to pull up every time unzip on Windows 95, but the DLLs the setup programs require to run say they need Win 2000 or greater. I also tried right clicking the .INF files and clicking install, but that didn't work at all from what I can tell.

Networking. I have two sites with modems that need to be connected, and do not own a domain so I cannot set up a VPN to connect them. That, and it's a relatively easy solution to networking two physical locations.

In case Linux doesn't work out, please respond in case there exists a driver, if not I suppose I will use Linux. In either case I do prefer to use Linux, however.

  • Re: Windows 95 modem question

I had a Fedora Core 5 DVD and a set of Red Hat 9 CDs on hand and neither of them worked, although I should probably get something that isn't from 2006 :/.

Will try Fedora 12. Maybe that will be a slight bit more up to date.

Edit: so that you know what I'm working with, this laptop has a Pentium M processor (with SpeedStep, 600MHz/1.5 GHz) with 512 MB RAM. Fedora 22 (latest last I checked- I prefer Fedora/Red Hat) definitely will have a hard time with that.

There aren't any Linux distros that I know of that will install to a USB device (or I would be using it ), but I will keep it in mind.

I did check the Conexant webpage, but they gave me the same as Dell.

  • Windows 95 modem question

This is probably the wrong place to ask this, but here goes.

I have an old Dell Latitude D505 laptop, which is missing it's internal hard drive. While I look for a new one online, I have (with a little help from USB emulation) set up Windows 95 on an external hard drive as a temporary fix. While the setup works, and Windows works like a dream, I need to have some functionality from my modem (I have my reasons. ), which is a Conexant D480 MDC V.92 modem. While looking up drivers, the only ones I could find came from Dell and worked only with Windows 2000 or later. I now ask: does...

  • Re: YEC capacitor question

Is there a way to tell if this is a fake other than with the measuring equipment?

Also, I noticed the part number on the cap is PL6051020 but the datasheet says the format should be WPL2R76051020. Could this mean something significant or is it probably an outdated datasheet?

  • YEC capacitor question

I have recently gotten my hands on a rated 6 Farad, 2.7 volt YEC capacitor. With its small size and rather low voltage rating, I question whether this is a legit 6F cap or yet another fake. The only problem is that I don't have any testing equipment, only a D battery and some wire. (My cheapo DMM finally broke and I have nothing to test capacitance, ESR, etc.) My question is, is there any way to test the legitimacy of the cap?

I just have that inkling of a feeling that tells me that the cap may indeed be fake. I have attached pics of the cap and datasheet.

    Capacitor:...
