Bleep! Wrong! I destroyed my "genuine" Windows XP Pro OEM CD, because it decided to say that I exceeded the limits of the number of activations for the product key after reinstalling!

It felt like Microsoft was saying, "F-you, you're punished, you're banned from activating.
You might as well get a pirated copy of Windows XP."

You can get, sort of, unlimited activations on the same machine if

        1) it's a retail copy.
        2) You have something like two weeks between activations, or more.

OEM copies get _three_ installs, then they report that you can't do it anymore.

        2 solutions.

        1) Call India and get them to give you an activation code.
        2) At the first install, after you've installed all the base drivers, make an image of the system.

There's a data file somewhere in the Windows folder that pertains to activation. If you want to be able to reactivate the same machine, you can just copy and restore that file manually. At boot, Windows hashes your machine to see if it matches the data in that file. Since it will match, Windows is happy. Or so I've read anyway.

I'm not sure if that works on OEM installs, but that's my assumption.

It does work on OEM installs, but the two times I've tried it, it didn't want to work for me. I'm not sure, but I suspect that even _driver revision levels_ will matter.

                      by mkdj
                      Hello everyone,

About me, my goal and the equipment I (don't) have:
I am brand new to this forum, and I am eager to learn about repairing laptops. I have an engineer background although I haven't done electronics for a while. I have watched several Youtube videos in the last two months, trying to understand how to diagnose a faulty motherboard. I have a USB-C Amp meter and a classic multi meter. No DC Power Supply to inject voltage, no soldering iron to replace components.

About my issue and my goal:
A friend of mine has a MacBook Air M1 A2337 that does not...

I ask some good person for help on "@" character and how to understand the indicated
                      by gabri2211
Greetings to all of you, as you will understand from the questions, I'm not familiar with electronic diagrams .... from theory to practice there is always an abyss :o)

1 - I often find the "@" character in the electronic diagrams of laptops near the component and I'd like to understand if it indicates a component that may not be present in the real hardware execution or if there is a different explanation for the use of this @.

                      2 - I write these examples:
                      2S@ PC217 0.22U_0603_16V7K 16 volts (max) what does it mean 7K ?
                      ...

can anyone help with enabling UMA on the 9500 XPS board ( LA-J191P ) ?
                      by openminded
in the mean time I wrote the second link to the chip, placed it and the laptop went on and showed the card.
Just like before after a reboot the error 43 came up.
I tried to heat the ram chips and the actual dGPU chiop without success - even with 2 RAM chips less it behaves the same.
Giving up on making it work, can anyone help with enabling UMA on the 9500 XPS board ( LA-J191P )?

I have never done this and been trying to understand it from the schematics, but for a beginner as I am it is hard to understand from that.
Page 15 has some info mentioning UMA and...

Trying to understand how to find best replacement cap for old parts.

Recently I purchased a Tektronix TDS1012, a 20 years old product for cheap and I thought it could be a nice opportunity for playing (i.e. recapping) and learn something in the process.
The power supply board is exactly the same from this post so I'll just steal it for now.

I'm trying to find replacements for all those Lelon electrolytic caps, but then quickly...

Harman Kardon MAS101 Help me understand how this 5.6V_STB is created?
                      by ohren
                      Hello,

I'm looking at a power supply board from a Harman Kardon MAS101 amp, because it's fun, basically. The problem is I'm pretty crap at looking at a circuit and understanding what it does. I've tried to make a faithful drawing of the relevant parts though.

I'm hoping someone can lend me their intuition to explain how the 5.6V standby pin gets its voltage in the diagram attached.

                      A few notes:

                      - I'm not very good at identifying the type of transistor or their pinouts in-circuit, so I represented them as three pin rectangle/capsule shapes,...
