Bleep! Wrong! I destroyed my "genuine" Windows XP Pro OEM CD, because it decided to say that I exceeded the limits of the number of activations for the product key after reinstalling!

It felt like Microsoft was saying, "F-you, you're punished, you're banned from activating.
You might as well get a pirated copy of Windows XP."

You can get, sort of, unlimited activations on the same machine if

        1) it's a retail copy.
        2) You have something like two weeks between activations, or more.

OEM copies get _three_ installs, then they report that you can't do it anymore.

        2 solutions.

        1) Call India and get them to give you an activation code.
        2) At the first install, after you've installed all the base drivers, make an image of the system.

There's a data file somewhere in the Windows folder that pertains to activation. If you want to be able to reactivate the same machine, you can just copy and restore that file manually. At boot, Windows hashes your machine to see if it matches the data in that file. Since it will match, Windows is happy. Or so I've read anyway.

I'm not sure if that works on OEM installs, but that's my assumption.

It does work on OEM installs, but the two times I've tried it, it didn't want to work for me. I'm not sure, but I suspect that even _driver revision levels_ will matter.
