No I ment what I said, But I do not consider myself a millionaire because anyone at my age that no longer has a income to last them from 55+ to 85+ without government help is a dumbass Democrat waiting for a handout from people that had the forethought to plan for old age.

I think that has more to do with being a worthless baby boomer than it has to do with being a Democrat. Most of the entire generation didn't plan for their retirements and they have to keep working well over the age of 60, and they hold up the job market for young people.

You need around a quarter of a million dollars to retire from the age of 60 up to around 80.

I get laughed at by my fellow iphone-worshippers, for being 'cheap' and 'not being able to afford' an iphone 5.

I then have to explain that I CHOSE my phone because it's rocking a quadcore 1.6ghz cpu, 2Gb of RAM, a 13MP camera, i've chucked a 64Gb sd card in the sd card slot, and I can actually take the battery out of my device by simply removing the back cover.

Oh... and I can just plug it into a PC and it reads and writes as easy as a USB pen. No cruddy itunes software needed.

I think just about every last one of my coworkers have iphones. As far as I can guess I can count the ones without one on my fingers (then again, no formal poll). I refuse. NO iphony for me.

I ended up getting a late model Android phone recently for fun, but I hate it too because there's too much dependency on Google. My personal data is NOT free, thank you. And I want my OSS, and I shouldn't have to "root" it - I should get the root password with the machine!

I'm still trying to hold on to my sick and dying Nokia N900 It does just about everything I need to do. If only everything on it was OSS, that would be my perfect phone. It may only have a 600MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 5MPx camera, but having a normal Linux-like (Debian-based, not some android BS fake linux) environment, that's what I want.

They're hardly the "more open" alternative they claim to be...

Before I made the switch to android, I had a Nokia (cant remember the model - something with XpressMusic?) and it was great. The ignorant ones had iphones and I was belittled about my little touchscreen nokia. Yet... (it had all the usual features - sd slot, removable battery, GPS was far superior, camera was better, youtube worked flawlessly - haha! (i remember my colleagues iphone for some reason couldn't play most the videos?) and I'm pretty sure, it was about a quarter of the cost of an iphone.

Oh... and I could plug that one in, and operate just like a USB stick as well.

Then android came out, flooded the market and I got hooked...
(Now got a dedicated android box hooked to the TV for my *free* streaming pleasures) Not bothered rooting any of my devices as of yet. They all seem to perform the tasks I ask - don't want to risk bricking the devices with bad flashes.

Admittedly, in the back of my head, I do think Google is a bit erm... overwhelming? Like they've got their fingers in many pockets - so to speak.

Yeah I also had one of those Nokia Symbian phones (which includes the XpressMusic line like the 5800 which was a pretty good phone other than it was also very closed) It was the "cheap out 5800" Nuron from eBay as it was cheap. I unfortunately after years of using it, killed its charging circuitry somehow, prompting the acquisition of the N900. I'm still using the Nuron's battery in the N900...

Granted in the smartphone infancy (Symbian) they tended to be less cumbersome. And it also worked as a standard usb mass-storage device.

Now Androids by default don't work as mass-storage? Honestly I haven't tried the lollipop device but I thought at least the eMMC also used MTP which isn't quite as good as mass-storage.
I can't blame it for not using mass-storage however, too many risks for stepping on each other's foot. This was definitely apparent on the N900, alas Nokia did get it working with caveats.

Iirc cyanogenmod has mass storage support. Stock images, not so much.

How does cyanogen deal with the dual access issue?
Nokia does it the hack way: unmounts and then exports as mass-storage. Which means that while it's plugged in, the phone can't access the storage.

Well, I've always known hence getting the N900, but I ended up getting this device because it was (more than) 10x faster and (more than) 10x more RAM than the N900, as well as the fact I wouldn't have to deal with hardware that has physically failed on it. Also I wanted to see if I could somehow workaround the "issues" with Android... It's been tougher than I thought. It indeed is more "open" than the other alternative that's this thread is talking about, but nowhere near "open" enough.

What issues do you have with Android eccerr0r ? What is it you're trying to do ?
I am running both stock Android and Cyanogenmod here.

Don't forget Google is an advertising company. They are happy to provide all the things they do for free because they want to know what you the user does. The more free services they provide, the more data they collect about the users. The same as Apple and the same as Microsoft to some extent.

Their "OS" really brings me no value. Like my N900 proves, I should be able to run a regular Linux userland and still use it as a phone instead of this "phoney system" that calls itself a type of Linux.

My ideal world, I run Gentoo on this phone and still have it function as a phone... I wouldn't care if I can't run Android apps, as long as I have access to the full OSS repository by simply compiling it. A desktop in my pocket, I'll be glad to deal with the problems of a poorly written touch UI - as if Android was perfect to begin with...

I really don't care too much for the "Linux" kernel that comes with Android, thus that too needs to be replaced, so any "along with" doesn't count. Android, if it still runs, needs to be completely within a VM.

The other scary thing is support droppage. It looks like phones frequently get support dropped, most likely due to one major problem with ARM SOCs: they fail to have hardware compatibility, from one to another. New phone comes out that's not software compatible with the old? Old gets dropped... This is also miserable.

Used Android, Apple, and pure Linux machines, Apple costs are high but considering I have one that is over ten years old and still runs (No issues with updates over the years) as to Microsoft )No longer used or recommended in the industry I work in, (I have wasted two months of my lifetime watching the blue screen of death or this version s no longer supported) Mainly use Linux software now, but changes are about to happen due to ARM and M1, M2, M3 / I think that Intel and Microsoft are on loosing ground now (Look at how many developments Microsoft start and then pull out or scrap, it follows four year cycles) !

I voted somewhat because there charging requirements that you have to buy there lighting cables is bunch of nonsense and the way they treat the people who develop applications get shafted by how much they want them to pay Apple company for them to release it

I have to agree with you that the batteries that they use in iPads are decent in quality they do last for quite some time because I have one that is at least 6 to 8 years old and still works decent for how old it is
