Download the hard drive diagnostic software from the manufacturers website. Burn it to CD and boot.

      Re: HDD error help

I don't know if Ubuntu includes Gnome-Disk-Utility anymore but that tool should also flag errors like this (probably a SMART condition that the hard disk is flagging to the OS).

But you should heed that warning. Then again you should always backup the hard drive...

heed that warning. take it from someone who has processed thousands of recycled drives, its going and for all you know its going fast.

Hi guys; update on the HDD issue; well i change to another Sata HDD,installed Win 7 and then upgraded to win 10 TP and all good,
          i really don't like to deal with software or hardware Issues,too much to my head,i always like to go the easier route;
on the other HDD that had the HDD Error failing, i installed Ubuntu14.04 and no error notifications,i keep it as spare,in case i'm not given a free Win 10 RTM.

              Re: HDD error help

That happens because SMART has been tripped. I don't think Ubuntu monitors that, whereas windows does (which is why you didn't get the error in Ubuntu). You could download and run a Short Drive Self Test with Seatools on the drive, and it would probably fail.

diff i installed win 7 from an Iso that gives 30 days grace, then i ticked the on line activation then installed Ethernet drivers that i had in an USB stick then updated all l win 7 updates,
then i went in MS and log in as i have an account with MS for Win 10 technical preview, then upgraded to build 10041 then to 1049 and everything is running smooth.

my question is, will i be able to fool Ms to keep a legit free win 10 RTM?

what i wonder why MS lets you upgrade to win 10 tp from a win 7 that is on 30 days trial?

                      Re: HDD error help

This is of pc pro web site regarding windows 7 upgrades to windows 10
(23/03/2015): Jane McCallion: Just when it looked like Microsoft was getting ready to bring those who had been using pirated versions of Windows back into the fold with Windows 10, the company has done an abrupt, if rather half-baked, flip-flop.

Last week, Terry Meyerson, who heads up Microsoft's Windows division, told Reuters: "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." He explained that this would help Microsoft "re-engage" with the hundreds of millions of potential customers in China in particular, who are currently running "non-genuine" (i.e. pirated) versions of Windows. ZDNet went on to confirm that the offer wasn't open only to pirates in China, but around the world.

Over the weekend, however, it began to appear that Microsoft – or at least part of Microsoft – had undergone a change of heart. Not wishing to contradict itself completely, the company issued ZDNet this fantastic piece of legalese fudging:

"With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade."

Ars Technica was also sent the same statement and, when it tried to clarify "the material implications of having a 'non-genuine' free upgrade to Windows 10" was stonewalled.

                        Re: HDD error help

To check S.M.A.R.T. numbers I use Crystal Disk Info for Win7,8 (free, but un-click the adware box during install). It will also log your numbers, email on troubles etc.

The Google paper on disk failures ("Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population") found few S.M.A.R.T. parameters correlate with impending drive failure- first Scan Error, re-allocations, etc.
Drive temperature had no effect on lifetime. It's an interesting read but they wouldn't say which manufacturers are lousy.

Hi guys Update on HDD failure,i did the test in Ubuntu 14.04,although it doesn't show any signs of failure, running Ubuntu at this moment.
                          here the results.
For now i will run it in Ubuntu till it fails, besides in my opinion ,for me Ubuntu 14.04 better than win 7 or 10,i just stream and browse though ,
i'll keep the good HDD with Win10 Tp installed and will check it out when Win 10 RTM comes out , if MS requires money then screw it, i'll keep free Ubuntu 14.04 very happily.

this one will probably start dropping sectors, or just go right to the click o' death.

As far as the onboard diagnostics say, the drive has already failed: it ran out of spare sectors and data loss is imminent, if you haven't lost any already from the reallocations. Count your blessings and your backups now! And your money for a new drive...

The CRC error section looks like possibly a bad board on the HDD.
                                        Maybe bad cache RAM?
