    Quiet 1U Socket 370 heatsinks

Anyone know of a heatsink/fan that's relatively quiet, usable in 1U enclosures, for Socket 370?
Was thinking about replacing a fan; while it still works and probably will work forever, it's extremely noisy as the fan rubs against the fan cage with a worn out bearing...

The fan is weird, it's a squirrelcage type fan sucking air from the heatsink and expelling it to the side unlike the typical suck down and into the heatsink.

CPU is a Celeron Tualatin... so 40W or so.

      Quiet? 1U? Is that possible?

it is possible, but not usual or easy.
you need a big flat heatsink like the flower ones,
and a fucking big fan that runs slow.

but the other problem is the case, you need to suck the air out or you just create a vortex of hot air going around and around.

it depends on the amound of space in the rack.
the other thing is rack psu's are often loud because they are small and output a lot of current.

          mutually exclusive!

Yeah it's just a usual 1U- high rackmount, but I don't have a rack and this is in my house, not a datacenter

The small 1U case has a few small 1.5" fans on it to suck the hot air out. I'm sure that's also making significant noise, but the current cpu fan with its scraping is making much, much more...

I do wonder if I can trim a bit off the blades so that it will stop scraping against fan encapsulation...

The current fan is like a turbocharger, if you think of it like that. The blades are totally encapsulated, it can never eat fingers. This thing blows to the back where the case fans are, and sucks up from the heatsink (think of a car turbocharger and put that on top of the heatsink, inlet pointing straight down to heatsink, and turbine is an electric motor on top)...

I'm open to replacing both the fan and the heatsink. Was hoping the virtue that it's a Celeron Tualatin that perhaps I can get away with a smaller fan/heatsink but probably not...

              Colocation? $50/mo 1U 1A Just a PM away!

But seriously, this seems to be your only option I can find in stock at Amazon. It won't be quiet but should be an improvement?

I'm sure this firewall box will do great at a colo!

Hmm... that might just fit... And anything is quieter than a fan that rubs its blades on the housing.

I just wonder how it will perform with airflow dynamics would need to change...

You could sit in front of it and blow on it when it starts beeping for overheat?
                  /sarcasm

Doesn't it have some fans blowing back throughout the case or no?

Re: Quiet 1U Socket 370 heatsinks

Yes it has case fans too, but the original turbofan 'exhaust' was pointing towards the case fans - with a downwards spreading airflow fan, the air movement is completely different now...

I don't think this thing even has thermal sensors in it. Would have to use an external remote thermometer to see if it will overheat or not...

                      woah...found a source for the same heatsink/fan....

It indeed is a dual ball bearing. Except the spindle broke, that's what happened to this fan. I think I'm going to see if I can epoxy the spindle back onto the rotor...

It's called a radial or centrifugal fan, it's absolutely the best option in a 1U case, because there is no room to pull air in from the top like on a conventional fan.
