Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread

I've finally moved on (mostly). The only XP machine left here is my seldom-used Lenovo Thinkpad T61 laptop. The three desktops run 7.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

You must have a sad, sad boring life if you hate on people harmlessly enjoying life with an animal costume.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

All laptops and desktops in my house (except for one) are running Windows 7. No way in h*ll Windows h8 will be allowed in this house.

The last XP computer is being used as a scanner radio app server for Kent County Fire & EMS. I am uploading the audio for internet/smartphone listening of the county's fire services. Looking to replace the computer (HP DC5100/LGA775 mini-oven) to something win-7 friendly. The DC5100 just doesn't have enough horsepower for XP, left alone win7
Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

I selected Windows 8 since my Asus laptop is running that. My ThinkPad is running Fedora. All my desktops are running Windows 7.

I guess you're out of luck then. once a poll has votes that setting can not be altered.

My God, someone voted for 8/8.1.....shovenose must be here!

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread

I have a couple systems that see common use.

Windows 7 Home Premium on the desktop
Windows 7 Home Premium on the laptop (Thinkpad T410)
Windows 7 Pro on the XPS 720 as OS 1
Windows XP Pro on the XPS 720 as OS 2 (used for the analog capture card - no 7 support)
Debian 7 on the random VAIO that runs my IRC server
Debian 6 on the Sunfire V480
Mac OS 10.7 on the Trashbook (Not a hate against Macbooks; it came from the trash and is completely trashed)
Xubuntu 13.10 on the Latitude D630.

Other than these just add a bunch of DOS 3.3 and 6.22.

I have now officially retired win xp, I may still use my copy for the occasional project, as long as it doesn't get on the Internet much. So now, my media machine runs windows 7, couldn't bring myself to use that tiles rubbish 8.
My thinkpad T41 has fedora, and my gpu rig dual boots with 7 and OpenSUSE and my server runs debian wheezy.

I hope windows 9 isn't crap, because that would be quite disheartening..

you guys hating on the tiles/metro of windows 8 do realise it's perfectly possible to pretty much completely avoid the start screen right?

I haven't seen it at all since I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 as everything I use on a day to day basis is either on the desktop as a shortcut or pinned to the taskbar (just like I worked in 7).

the right click menu on the start button thingy gives me access to 99% pf the stuff I used the start menu for before - including the shut down and reboot options.

Agreed.Let's hope they bring back the classic start menu and Aero.

I did that on my Acer Aspire 5349(now almost dead, screen's broken and the HDD failed) once.I was tired of 7 and went with Sever 2008 R2 (x64,there's no x86 version). With this wallpaperand the Aero theme you almost couldn't notice I was using Server 2008.That,if it wasn't the gray logon screen.
One problem it had though is that I couldn't install an antivirus unless I used the server version of it.

I can't do this on my tower PC because the 64 bit version of the VGA driver (VIA Chrome9 HC IGP)won't install.I already tried various versions of the 64 bit driver but it won't install.Any ideas why?

I have one computer running Windows 7 and two running 98. I also have Lubuntu running in VirtualBox, but I don't think that counts since it isn't actually installed on any computer.

True, you can avoid it, my brother uses it all the time.. But I personally think that having to work around or avoid a flop that Microsoft likes is a bit silly. Correct me if I am wrong, but, isn't there still no *actual* start button? I don't have much experience with 8 so I don't have much room to talk, but from the experience had, I can tell you I would rather stay away.

I always use MS Security Essentials. Had no issues with it on S2K8. I couldn't get my defrag utility to install though, wanted a more expensive server version of course, so I just used the one provided with windows.
