Re: more win10 stuff
That is true, and I do, but I just cant completely separate from MS :/ I was about to before win 10, but win 10 runs really well on my computer, so I'm satisfied with a dual boot. In the case of people who don't know how to do this though, I feel like they are the type of people who would definitely benefit from forced updates, since they wouldn't change the update settings to begin with....

Re: more win10 stuff
Ah, true, I meant gpedit, but I wasn't aware it only worked in the pro version :/ still, Im guessing the majority of people probably have pro, unless they have a key that came with an OEM computer....

Re: more win10 stuff
Pretty easy to disable automatic updating in win 10. People keep saying windows forces it, but one edit of the registry lets you choose to download updates, ask you, or not ever update, and it just shows up as a different update policy in windows update, so these issues can be avoided...

Re: more win10 stuff
Of course! And that's why I know security is an issue, but people primarily focus on the spying part, as its the most relatable. I also definitely agree Microsoft should give manual control of updates to power users, as ms even attempted to give windows 10 more options in that respect with powershell. But for the average user, mandatory updates do make sense to me.
Also, thanks for the feedback on my blog! I really appreciate itunfortunately it's sat dormant for a while due to life issues, but I'm finally pursuing my passions and...

Re: more win10 stuff
You seem a bit conspiratorial, maybe they were paid by ms, but I doubt it. I think it's more a marketing thing. Their customers and userbase most likely use winblows first, and macs second. A small percentage use linux, therefore not necessitating putting it on the main download page.
I own a brother j470dw and have installed its drivers in Linux, and the process was easy and made by someone who used Linux, so brother is at least trying to cater to their small userbase that uses Linux, which is much more than most would do. Especially...

Re: more win10 stuff
While I agree with you for the most part, Linux doesn't have the out of the box experience of juts working windows does, at least for me. For example, my z97 mobo can do internal graphics and external graphics at the same time, right, pretty normal. And windows just stretches my displays on both graphics cards. Cool, normal behavior. But when I was installing Linux, Linux mint debian edition to be exact, I had to download a whole host of packages just to get it to even see my internal graphics controller. Thats what I mean by dicking around. Yes...Last edited by SpectrHz; 08-07-2015, 11:23 AM.

Re: more win10 stuff
Whew! It's been a while since I've been here, and came over to see what people thought of win 10, and knew people would have problems with it ( i mean, we are talking about microshaft here,) but didn't expect this level of vehement hatredI actually quite like windows 10, as its much faster and takes better advantage of my computer (overclocked Pentium g3258, MSI z97m-g43, 16 GB RAM) the issue I had with win 7 was that a certain set of updates from micropeni-soft would destroy my boot partition and render win7 unbootable, combined with my performance issues...

Re: Casemodded Apple PowerMac G4 NAS
I tried my best in prepping it, including washing with isapropanol and a good scuffing, but this paint was just awfully difficult to work with and had a very easily scuffed finish. If you want a fun project though I would definitely recommend casemodding one of these puppies, makes a cool looking rig
...also thank you for the image fixing

Casemodded Apple PowerMac G4 NAS
So, I had a powermac, needed a NAS, and had a spare uATX board... what could go wrong?
Paint went wrong... I hate paint.... but still, I absolutely love the black on white casemod so many other G4's have been through , and thought I would give it a go! This machine was a bitch to mod, obviously apply didnt design it to accept ATX boards and I also only have one drive right now, still waiting on others. I also still need to make an IO shield and button it up a little better, but I think it makes a nice looking (and pretty quiet) machine that can accept 6 drives....

Re: c_hegge's new PC
Desktops dying? Since when? I think the gaming pc market is a bit to large for that :P especially since a lot of people were disappointed by the "next-gen" consoles, I've seen a lot more people buying desktops. But maybe I'm just biased

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
True, you can avoid it, my brother uses it all the time.. But I personally think that having to work around or avoid a flop that Microsoft likes is a bit silly. Correct me if I am wrong, but, isn't there still no *actual* start button? I don't have much experience with 8 so I don't have much room to talk, but from the experience had, I can tell you I would rather stay away....Last edited by SpectrHz; 02-26-2014, 09:48 AM.

Re: The 2014 Operating System Thread
I have now officially retired win xp, I may still use my copy for the occasional project, as long as it doesn't get on the Internet much. So now, my media machine runs windows 7, couldn't bring myself to use that tiles rubbish 8.
My thinkpad T41 has fedora, and my gpu rig dual boots with 7 and OpenSUSE and my server runs debian wheezy.
I hope windows 9 isn't crap, because that would be quite disheartening..

Re: IBM thinkpad T41 intermittent backlight
That's what I am figuring, I have a few older ccfl displays that start up red, so I will probably replace it since it's cheap. It's not a video issue either since I see what is on the LCD, and the video out is perfect, so at least it *should* be fixableLast edited by SpectrHz; 02-25-2014, 01:48 PM.

IBM thinkpad T41 intermittent backlight
So, I bought a thinkpad t41 on ebay for 10 bucks the other day (Intel pentium M 1.6ghz, 1.5 gb ram, radeon mobility 7500) and did not expect much, fortunately, it was in really good condition despite looking a bit nasty. Even the battery holds a charge, 1 hour on battery! Not bad! Screen first starts up red and fades into full color, and it's missing a key, but fine otherwise.
Now the issue; sometimes, when started up or coming out of standby, the inverter will fire on the ccfl tube, flash, and power off. Other times, the inverter will fire on the tube, and sustain on. Completely...

Re: Glossy or Matte LCD?
Oh my I can't stand glossy... When next to a matte screen. On their own, I like them. My Vaio has a glossy screen and I despise it, the colors are waaay to saturated when stood next to my matte LCD. Doesn't look too bad next to my CRT, but looks really nice on its own in a dark room. Also, other than fingerprints, I very much like the glossy on my tablet, but for desktops. Matte or CRT any day of the week.

Re: Windows XP EOS plans
Bah, I keep meaning to ponder a new os, my only xp machine is an old hp I keep around as an archive, been so long since I powered it up the cmos battery died. It would run 7 okay but I already have windoors 7 activated on two motherboards... (don't tell Bill!)
Also it runs some pretty proprietary programs that I have no idea how I originally set up, and doubt they would run on Linux...

Re: The Future of the Desktop PC
Like any technology, someone will need a desktop/tower and there will always be some market for them. My tower can do things my laptop cannot, and my laptop does MANY things my tablet could not dream of, and my tablet does things my phone cannot.
So I don't think they will ever dissapear, especially not for me
...as for tiles/android/ios...

Old archives box runs win xp, my Vaio runs win 7 pro, and my gpu rig runs 7 pro and my file server runs debian wheezy

Re: Windows XP End of Life Approaching
I've still got xp running on an old hp desktop with my seldom accessed files on it in few old drives, probably going to leave it until it refuses to boot or blows out some caps
