    hard drive spin up problems

Ever since I got my Sparcstation 1+ I have been having trouble with one of it's internal drives. I am assuming something between sticktation and a bad connector but anyways, here's what's going on.
The drive in question is a Quantum Empire series ProDrive SCSI disk that's full height 3 1/2 and of unknown size. If you were to remove the drive, hold it in your hand and power up, if the drive were not to spin up you would feel the drive try to twist in your hand several times brfore giving up. If the drive did spin up then you would feel no twisting motion.
The problem occurs in any temperateure and at any time (if not used in months to right after you switched it off). It will not stop while the drive is spinning and is completely random at times.
I'm siding with really nasty sticktation but what's your word?

Stick 'er in the freezer and see if the problems continue. If not, then it's very likely the drive is shot.

At the very least, I need topcat to confirm TRUTHFULLY.
After that I can start looking for a new scsi disk.

I've had IDE Quantum ProDrive LPS in my print server and it had problems spinning up - it retried maybe 4 times with "beep" sound and then stopped. I replaced it with another one and this one succeeds after two or three retries.

Hey!! I can't help it that I'm a genius!!! Seriously though, good advise all around here.... The first thing I would cables, I've seen bad SCSI cables cause weird things like that.... I doubt its overheating, especially if its 5400RPM... If it is overheating, there really isn't much u can do except keep it cooled long enough to recover data from it and then toss it. It being a Quantum, that's not a good sign... Everyone remember the Quantum 'Bigfoot'?? LOL If you need some SCSI drives, let me know, I have a big box full of them.

                                    I love bigfoot drives!
I got a 2.5 gig here that's got bad blocks but it still works great.
In the case of the drive, I really don't have the ability to do a backup.
1-the system is getting many disk errors so it seems both drives are going on me
2-None of my systems (not even linux) can see the partitions properly. They see that there are several partitions but they all look unformatted to ubuntu.
I'm working on getting SunOS reinstalled. I just want to see what the last owner had stashed away.

                                    Why did I want topcat?
Well being the site creator and server manager and all I jumped to conclusions and thought that if anyone knwe haow a hard drive worked on this site...it would be him.
I completely forgot that others also know the inner workings of a hard drive.

                                        +1

I also get paid well to recover data, and now is the time to save yourself some real grief, and (potentially) horrific expense.

As noted above, the freezer trick works... once. Put the drive in a plastic bag and squish all the air out. Freeze it solid. Thaw it out completely and let it regain room temperature.

Connect it to a system that is all prepared to accept data, make a GHOST image, or whatever you use to get the data. In my experience, you have one (1) try at this, then the drive fails for good.

                                          by federalhouse
                                          Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                                          **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

                                          **What I've Tried So Far:**

PC case - Hard drive rails
                                          by tmcw
A friend gave me his old PC case (with MB, and PSU), but no hard drive rails, he said he only used the 2.5" SSD spot inside, and used an external hard drive for data. He said that he'd have a look for the supplied rails, but I doubt he'll find them.

So I was wondering if case manufacturers used any type of standard 3.5" hard drive rail?

I'm used to the various Dell hard drive caddies or rails (and HP and Lenovo to a lesser extent), or el cheapo cases where you screw through the frame to fix the drive.

Now, the case is a CiT Gaming Case, and...

Hard drive wont spin up unless connected by usb

Hey guys, I've got what I feel is a bit of a strange problem. I have a 1TB Toshiba sata hard drive that will not spin up when connected to a pc diectly with a sata cable. I've tried it in several different PC's and nothing happens. The drive does not spin up or make any noise at all and the pc doesn't detect it.

However, it will work absolutely fine when connected to a computer through a usb to sata converter.

The converter is actually the board that came from a seagate portable hard drive with a dead drive. Since it was a 2.5" drive and ran off usb, there was...
