    c_hegge's new PC

As I've mentioned in the free scores thread, I got got my hands on a s1155 motherboard (more specifically, a Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP) absolutely free. So ever since, I've been acquiring parts for a new PC to build out of it. Now, it's just about done, and it's just about to replace my 1st gen i5 PC (which will go to my parents, to replace their PDC E5300).

The build. Probably not my best cable work, but I just didn't have any more room behind the motherboard tray to hide more cables (aside from the fact that some aren't long enough).

Unfortunately, the DPS-750CB in my old PC doesn't fit in the new case (a CoolerMaster N200), so this had to do - a DPS-600MB. It looks very similar inside, though, with the same two-PCB design, and it also weighs a ton. I had to re-arrange a few of the cables for better 12V power distribution and add a second PCI-E connector.

The heat sink was a $10 fleabay score. It didn't come with any mounting brackets - either for a fan or for the motherboard. To mount it, I installed some motherboard standoffs into the mounting holes on the motherboard using some washers and nuts I had in my screw collection, and screwed the cooler into the standoffs. It seems to work well. The CPU stays under 10*C hotter than the room temperature for the most part. The standoffs were a bit short, though, so I can't do the screws all the way up. I attached the fan to it with zip ties, and used a few more zip ties to stop it from sagging under its weight

The back of the mobo tray. The right side panel is a bit hard to get on with the cables there (especially the ATX connector). I had a similar issue with my old PC, though. Note the nuts for the standoffs around the CPU socket.

I mounted the fans in between the front of the chassis and the bezel. The reason is that, like most cases, the CoolerMaster N200 has a hole in the bottom of the bezel. while this is good for allowing me to stick my hands under it to remove it, it allows a lot of dust in. With the fans mounted on the front, they're very close to the front of the bezel, which is filtered, so they won't be sucking unfiltered air through he hole in the bottom.

Bezel on. excuse the mess on my desk in the background.

FWIW, The CPU is a core i7 3770K, and the RAM is 8GB of Kingston HyperX Blu. The SSD, HDD, and GPU will be re-used from my current rig.

Nice PC! Those CPUs overclock well if you ever need more performance, but I can't image you ever would

You like that case? Considering it for a client build.

I gave that case a Gold award at HWI. For $50 (in the US) it's hard to beat.

That heatsink installation is too well done to qualify as ghetto .

Little piece of advice to improve cooling: If no fans are to be placed at the roof, seal completely the roof openings. Otherwise the rear extractor 120 fan will just recirculate air thru the roof, instead of pulling hot air from inside the case.

How do you like the i7 performance so far? For 50$ the case looks nice.

He has two intake fans... So he has positive pressure?

I haven't done anything much with it yet. I'm still in the process of sorting out my data from the old rig.

I will eventually be adding a duct in front of the rear fan to make it suck air only from the heatsink. I originally planned to install it on the rear of the heat sink in push-pull configuration, but the funny shape on the back was causing the fins to touch the blades.

                Re: c_hegge's new PC

Yes he has 2 intake fans, a very slight positive pressure, and a big hole in the roof thru which the rear fan will recirculate air instead of pulling it from inside the case, regardless of pressure sign.

                Comp fans ain't no turbochargers.

Even better would be placing an extractor fan in the roof hole.

                EDIT -

Good, that will secure that the rear extractor pulls only from the inside. Have a look here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1041926/h...ning-pics/1870

Yup, that's pretty much exactly what I plan to do. As I said, it's not quite complete, as there's still some playing with HDDs and data to do. Once I get it all running with everything copied from the old one, I'll look at refining the cooling a bit and maybe a slight OC.

EDIT: I probably could add that I don't want to add any more exhaust fans. I'm trying to maintain positive air pressure, so that air will exit through the un-filtered vents, and all of the incoming air will be filtered.

                      Near-extinction is more correct

Still, pretty sweet build. Nice case for $50... wouldn't work for me personally since all my stuff is ATX or larger... still, it's pretty awesome.

I did say only 'close' to extinct..... I'm the same way....I'll be fighting for ages to keep antiquated hardware going just to not succumb to the tablet and smartphone movement. I am so glad I used good hardware on my PC's, the likelihood of failure is very low on non-moving parts.

Gentlemen, you are being deceived by the tablet and tiles shills propaganda .

Desktops are still more than a quarter of global sales, and still sell more than the toys:

And, more importantly, look at the internet connection percentages (here 'desktop' includes true desktops + laptops):

^ Desktops and laptops are, of course, much more useful and used than the toys.

The toys have approximately the same chance of superseding desktops as microcars have of ousting family cars .

That's true, but a tablet is still capable of sending emails and checking a failbook or other social nutwork page. For the average home user, that's all they want to do, so I wouldn't be surprised if desktops do die out in favour of tablets in the next decade or so.

While I do have a tablet, I refuse to use it for any serious work. It's good for occasional web browsing while I'm away, but I hate typing anything more than quick notes on it, so for any serious work, the 22" monitor, full sized keyboard and extra processing power of the desktop are here to stay, and I'm sure that most business and enthusiast users feel the same way.

I didn't need to recap anything. The PSU is full of NCCs and Rubycons, and the motherboard uses all OS-CONs.

The PSU is the only part of the PC which I can hear. The rest of the fans are almost dead silent. I did replace the original Delta 2BB fan with a SanAce, and it's not too bad now, but still audible over the other fans. It's one thing I did love about the 750CB - that one was quieter.

I've finally started playing around with it some more, now that I've got most of my stuff off the other one. It's much faster booting up and loading FSX than the old s1156 core i5

The ducting is now done, so there shouldn't be too many problems with the rear fan recirculating air. I'm finally satisfied enough that I've got everything I need off the old one, and that this machine is ready to replace it.

I took FSX for a spin yesterday on it, and both the load times and frame rates are noticeably better.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

                                        Looks tidy!
I couldn't even see the zip ties when I viewed this thread yesterday. Definitely not ghetto. You want ghetto, come see my rigs .

                                        **edit**
And just as I posted this and said nothing is ghetto there, I noticed you put up some new pics. Now you're doing it right!
