    Corrosion on GA-M61P-S3

This mobo I got c. 2007 worked hard for a couple of years in a dusty, salty environment, and then became more and more difficult to boot.
Once I learnt about the great cap swindle, I thought it might be the caps.. but none are showing obvious signs of failure.
Could the corrosion visible near the USB_1394 label and the general dusty, salty appearance of the mobo bring on bad-cap-like symptoms of failure?

i lived near the south coast and can tell you that it will do that, it also has a habit of blowing inverter base aircons. we will need to see pic of the whole board bottom and top so we can recognise any possibly bad caps.

Not sure, but if the motherboard is very dirty, give it a wash with warm water and any non-clorine-based detergent of your choice (liquid soap or liquid laundry detergents are generally fine). Then let the motherboard dry for a few days and try it again.
Before you wash it, though, make sure to remove the CMOS battery.

I was dabbing the corroded area with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol, and one of the tiny SMD components just came right off the board and attached itself to the cotton bud. The contacts were very corroded, so perhaps this board is too far gone.
Thanks for the tips momaka and goontron, I'll get some pix of the whole board later.

If it's just a ceramic cap, the board may be okay. I guess pictures will confirm. If the rest of the components aren't too bad, you should wash it - the sooner the better.

Let me guess...You live near an ocean? I wonder if throwing a couple of small desiccant packs in the tower would help prevent this?

Wow! I've seen corroded computer stuff, but nothing like this.
Yeah that kind of corrosion can definitely make contacts on slots (CPU, RAM, etc.) not connect properly to whatever they are connected to. Could also be rust that has fallen from the ports and partially shorting signal traces. Give it a wash and scrub and see what happens.

Yes, the PC was in the carport, on the floor, working hard, with ocean less than a mile away to the north, east, and south, and mad dogs running round the dusty windy yard all day long.
I was recovering from a serious accident, that's why i was working/living in the carport. And I like to keep the doors and windows open, and I hate air-con.
                      Hence, corroded, dirty mobo.

Here is the PSU from said computer. Oddly enough, it is reluctant to start. Methinks time to discharge caps and give it a bit of a clean.

As you now probably know. Probably not the best idea to have a PC running and operation outside. You would get all that lint build up. Living near the ocean just seems to make it worse I guess.

I got a huawei D15 that came in for no power repair. Device charges , charging led flashedms but doesn't turn on. I found corrosion on an IC (ic name is BDJCY1...I can't find out much info about it online). I removed this ic and two pads are corroded but they can be repaired. To my knowledge inductors never short to ground (i might be wrong and please those that are more knowledgeable than me can correct me). I found few inductors short to ground when my multimeter is in beep mode ,indicating a short in the line of those inductors...but I don't know how to go about to find the shorted component...

                              Hi Guys,
I have a Logitech Z506 with some problem.
The main problem was the front right and subwoofer gave a hard noise.
After the disassemble I found many corrosion on the mainboard as you can see on the pictures.
I removed the corrosions and the noise disappeared but the sound too.

I think some parts is damaged because of the corrosion.
I searched a lot on the internet but I cant find correct schematic for this pcb, so I dont know what is the correct values of the damaged parts.
But I found same good pictures of this board.

                              Hello guys,

I'm learning about logic board (motherboards) repairs. I don't do repairs professionally, but I manage from time to time to repair something for my family and friends.

What caught my attention is this visual inspection guide written by Louis Rossmann. It seems that corosion on probe points on the motherboard can "kill" Macbook. https://wiki2.rossmanngroup.com/inde...ual_inspection
I wonder how corrosion cause this. If there is a track that has a probe point made on it and corrosion is build up on that place, does this means...

                              Hi All.

I have a A3113 MacBook Air 13" (M3) that had minor liquid damage. The screen remains on if the lid is closed, the keyboard doesn't work, but trackpad and Touch ID does.
The LAS was corroded, but I have tested it on an A2681 (M2) and it functions fine. Anyway, I ordered a new one and replaced it and calibrated it with Apple.

I have checked the main voltages going to the daughterboard and they are present. Diode mode reading on the LAS line which goes direct to the SoC is also correct, no short.

So then I replaced the daughterboard, and...

                              Can thermal paste cause corrosion?
                              by caspian
                              Dear members,

I have got an ordinary gray thermal paste that has no name/model on the box.
I put some of this thermal paste on a 128-pin QFP IC. A bit of this thermal paste was put on pins of the IC.
I tried to clean the pins by thinner but the thermal paste cannot be cleaned from the pins properly. because the pins are tiny and the thermal paste is stuck between them.
Is it possible that the thermal paste damages pins of the IC in long term by creating corrosion or something?
Is it safe to leave the thermal paste on the pins?
                              I guess the thermal paste...
