• Re: Viewsonic VA2323wm - No Backlight/Intermittent Power/buzzing transformer

I just saved the exact same monitor from e-waste bin at work. Same problem, no power, intermittent power. The exact same capacitor is bulging on mine as well. I'm going to replace that first, since it's the cheapest, easiest "fix" for now. If it works, I'll be replacing all of them Elite caps.

You may be on to something though. There is definitely some overheating issues. Right between that cap and the transformer the board is discolored, turning brown-ish. It looks like yours is...

How much is your time worth? Probably more cost effective to just buy a new wireless headset.

Looking for a good cap

HDTV won't power on

The bad cap is a JH.
CD264
105 c
A-3
450V
4.7uf
It's about 16mm high and 10mm wide

It's for a 40" Element HDTV
I can't find a model number, but serial number is DR000036700013184, if that helps

The first yahoo that replaced it used any ole capacitor he could find, did a horrible solder job, and used the wrong kind of solder. It worked for a few months, then pfft.

I just need a replacement cap, I can handle the rest. So I leave it up to you gurus. I'm good at troubleshooting and...

• Coby TFTV3225 - Standby light, no power

There's a similar model with similar problems (big surprise) https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31690&highlight=Coby+TFTV3227

This Crappy, I mean Coby that I'm looking at now is just as laughable and also failed to power up after "warming" up. It's the TFTV3225. A 32" steaming pile of feces.
I chuckled too when I saw a ground wire attached with a piece of foil tape. lol

The power supply has no visibly bad caps, but I'm sure there are some. When I plug it in, the standby light comes on but the TV fails to power on....

• Re: Hp g60 won't power on or charge

I've seen a few HP's recently with the same problem. It's the DC in jack, and/or an SMD on the mobo. Twice I've found a blown capacitor next to where the battery plugs onto the mobo.

• Re: HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr laptop power-up problem

I can't edit my last post for some reason. So sorry

I found my problem. I was going to post some pics, but my camera sucks. The close ups were just too blurry.

Anyway, on the top side of the motherboard close to where the battery plugs in... There's a blown capacitor. Nice and crispy. On the bottom side, almost directly beneath where the DC cable plugs into the mobo...There's a blown resistor labeled PD4. It's so bad that I can't see the color code. I found the schematic, so that should help. I guess...

• Re: HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr laptop power-up problem

I have a known good charger here that I use for testing and still get the same result. No charge, no power on. So it must be something on the motherboard. It's just weird that this is the second charger for this laptop that died within the last few months.

On a side note...I have small kids running around so its hard to find time to take a laptop like this apart. This has got to be one of the most difficult teardowns I've ever encountered. Last time I disassembled it, I think I counted 30+ screws. And there's still...

• Re: HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr laptop power-up problem

I've got the same problem with an HP pavillion DV7-1243CL. At first, the laptop wouldn't charge or turn on. I replaced the DC in jack cable and the laptop turned on but still wouldn't charge. Minor success.

few months later...it won't charge or turn on again. The adapter is reading 19.5 volts, and 0 on the center pin. Is it possible that a bad mosfet is killing the charger and or the dc in jack cable?

Anyway, I'm definitely checking this out. But I need to set aside some serious time to get to it. These...

• Re: Dell Inspiron M5030 7 beeps with no dispaly

What he means is reflow the GPU. It's a well known problem with this model. Afterwards, install speedfan and set it to keep that fan revving at all times. Dell's built in fan control is crap. (probably intentional) The fan will actually shut off at times.

Bridged with a tiny blob of solder and everything works like it should now. I'm keeping mine, but I bet a tidal of wave of "refurbished" Satellites are going to flood Ebay now. :P

• Re: What fails for you the most?

Wow! I was taken aback to see Seagate top the list. The most I've seen were Hitachi/Toshiba followed closely by WD Scorpio Blue/Black.

As a matter of fact, the most reliable drives I've seen were Seagates. I've got old Maxtor (Seagate) IDE drives running great in a couple of rigs right now. No errors at all.

The most fails in the last year or so has hands down been Toshiba. Specifically the laptop drives they make. Pure junk. One little bump and they start to click.

One brand I took a chance on about 5 yrs...

• Re: Apevia WIN-500XSPX recap

Thanks guys, but I am doubting if my Apevia PSU would even be worth fixing. All that time and effort replacing caps, only to have some other crappy component fail later. Especially when an equally cheap replacement can be had on Ebay for $20.

• Re: Apevia WIN-500XSPX recap

Wow, old thread. Why not give it a bump:p I have an Apevia 500W PSU that also came with an Apevia HTPC case. Same model number as this one... would you believe the board looks the same but the caps are different?
Of course I am having problems with mine as well. I'm still pretty noobish at this so I need a little help. I'm good at soldering, but don't know how to troubleshoot PSU's. Can someone point me in the direction of a PSU troubleshooting guide here (if one exists). Or should I just use this thread for assistance?

• Re: Dell Vostro 1310 won't POST, Num Lock LED flashing rapidly.

I see this on a lot of Dells. They are notorious for overheating because they throttle down the cooling fan. In fact, sometimes the fan isn't even on. It can be a pain to take control of the fan also. Speedfan has had to actually add a setting specifically for Dell laptops. Dell is one of those companies that thinks that even after you have given them money for a product, they still own it and should have control over it.

So if you do get this thing running again> install Speedfan,...

• Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I recently got an ipod touch 4th gen for $20. The girl that sold it to me had one of her friends replace the screen and when she turned it on, it was white. Anyone who has properly replaced a screen on these things knows that you have to do a reset afterwards.
And, yeah, this kid did a hack job of replacing the screen. it was ugly.
I didn't feel bad though, because she made her friend buy her a new one.

• Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

My friend's daughter gave me an iPOD touch 4 with a shattered screen. She told me to "just get rid of it". It also needed a wifi antenna, and home button.

For about $30 in parts, I am now the proud owner of a very expensive, overrated, Apple, Facebook, Google tracking device.

• Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

Where I work, once a year the IT dept. throws out the oldest PC's and gets new ones. I've gotten all kinds of stuff, like monitors (some with bad caps), keyboards and mice, RAM, Hard Drives, Routers, switches, etc. Pretty much everything.

So what do I do with all this stuff? I put together working computers and give them away to families that can't afford one.

Follow this guide word for word

Especially the reflowing part.

The oven trick should have been your last resort. And the way I've gotten the oven trick to work was to preheat the oven to 500 F. Double wrap the board in foil, leaving the top and bottom of GPU and Scaling chip exposed. Bake for about 2-5 minutes.

• Re: Sony STR-DB940 pulled back from the brink

Sounds like a similar problem I'm having with my Sony STR-K840P. The front right and rear left speakers have little to no sound. I've opened it up and had a look-see but never thought of checking the bottom of the board. Thanks for posting this, I'll report back if I find anything.
