some yes, like my laptop SATA to USB3.0 adapter S.M.A.R.T works good but there are ones out there that cant read S.M.A.R.T correctly(always showing ONE bad sector and cant run conveyance self test)but the rest works great.

should be fine as long as I keep an eye on it.
personally I would have half a mind to try putting the PCB into my computer tower where the built in dock is.

but as I have read online I can make it hot swappable but it will take some configuration.

Re: Got this Hard drive dock in a trade.

I have one just like it. Mine however got both IDE and SATA connectors as well as built in cardreader for loads of formats. But the formfactor is the same. Got it for free from a friend due to the usb connector had broken off. The soldering was so crappy that the connector had broken loose in one piece and i just had to solder it back in and works a charm. Only downside ive noticed so far is that the power adapter that came with it is a bit low on power, so if you do multiple copy operations at once so the head has to move a lot it sometimes just craps out, but other then that works fine.

I know its a cheap china thing cause that is where my friend got it from. But hey free is free

many of these docks have crap power supplies.a friend had one that was buggy as hell till i put the custom power cable on a decent and recapped 5 and 12v brick.its been fine ever since.the original was light, empty, and crude.it would not spin a wd 1tb black.he thought it was bad till he brought it to me to try and recover data.

Given that you gave away two laptop drives, I personally thought you got ripped off, especially if the drives were PATA and/or 7200RPM. I'd give maybe a 40gb SATA laptop drive or the like for that...

Agreed on the PSU bricks being junk for china docks... IIRC there's a thread on that actually.

I have the exact model you do. It's rubbish. Totally unreliable, good if you want to wipe a hard disk quickly because every second write it lays down some garbage to the disk.

              YMMV, best of luck!

Its a cheap dock you can get for under $20 on Newegg if you watch for them to go on sale. I would have never traded 2 80 2.5" sata drives for it but its your stuff so do what you want.

Do me a favor next time you have hard drives to unload let me know.

Asumming your talking to me, it would depend on the weight and size of the package. Does that mean you have some hard drives to unload?

I took apart an external hard drive to get a tiny little USB-SATA board. It supports hot-swapping and SMART. Problem is there's no DC-DC converter to get 12V, so it only works with laptop drives (and most destop SSDs).

                              by federalhouse
                              Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                              **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

PC case - Hard drive rails
                              by tmcw
A friend gave me his old PC case (with MB, and PSU), but no hard drive rails, he said he only used the 2.5" SSD spot inside, and used an external hard drive for data. He said that he'd have a look for the supplied rails, but I doubt he'll find them.

So I was wondering if case manufacturers used any type of standard 3.5" hard drive rail?

I'm used to the various Dell hard drive caddies or rails (and HP and Lenovo to a lesser extent), or el cheapo cases where you screw through the frame to fix the drive.

Now, the case is a CiT Gaming Case, and...

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...
