Agreed. Pull all critical data off it and replace drive ASAP. It isn't fun when it starts losing data, or worse, if it fails all at once. Been thru both situations.

@ shovenose: Is *your* hard drive really relevant in this topic?

That drive has had bad sectors for over a year. The computer is so slow and has so many other problems that it wasn't worth repairing. This computer will be replaced soon.

I've had HDDs with bad sectors for many years as well - it just all depends where they are. In my case, none of them had them where the OS files were so the computers were mostly unaffected.
We do have one laptop at work that boots extremely slow due to a dying 30 GB IBM/Hitachi Travelstar hard drive, though. I just looked into it last week. On boot up, the hard drive would click for about 5 minutes before finally completing the boot. Once it boots up, the computer runs fine with no problem. After running chkdsk, the computer booted very quickly twice, then the old problem resumed.
And this is not just an individual case. I have an old laptop HDD of my own (also an IBM/Hitachi Travelstar, 12 GB) that also has this issue. Amazingly, neither did the laptop at work nor my laptop show any problems when I ran the Hitachi Fitness Test Utility on those hard drives. Go figure.
So your laptop may actually be slow due to that reason. I'm using a PIII laptop for school, and it's pretty decent. I find it particularly funny that half the computers at school actually run slower, even though they are Core 2 Duos.

Well, not if you're looking at the raw data. Sometimes you may see a drive with 1 or 2 bad sectors still show "100" under the value column.

The CPU performance is extremely low. A 733MHz PIII is faster than the 1.2GHz Athlon XP-M in this computer and the graphics card has driver issues. Also, the computer gets hot enough to produce a burning smell. The computer is an HP Pavilion ze1210.

Also, the hard drive comment was supposed to be sarcastic.

Nope. Just providing a comparison :P

My experience is that unless it came from the factory with those values nonzero, once a bad sector appears it's soon followed by many more.

If a drive came from the factory with bad sectors on the G-list I would want a refund.

                  HP Probook 650 G4 - Lost power?During AMT de-provision process, now I get blackscreen
                  by rive.hafintosh
First here is how things went down.

I entered the bios and began to de-provision Intel AMT - it began with a reboot and then prompted me to de-provision AMT - proceed Y/N -
I pressed Y and hit enter, and I thought the PC shutdown, but perhaps it actually lost power at this point. I had the power adapter plugged in but apparently the plug from the wall came out of the brick when I wasn't noticing so 1 of two things could have happened…
Something went wrong with the process, or it lost power during the process and corrupted something
I tried making a HP recovery...

TCL 40S6500A - stuck in boot process
                  by TVAddict
Hi everyone, i have a TCL 40" that's stuck in the boot process, here's what happens, at first turn on you get the TCL logo after that it goes to the 4 rotating color circles, it does not go beyond this point, the color circles just keep going on, from what i've read and seen on YT apparently it's a firmware/software issue, i'm willing to try a software update via the usb method but have no luck finding a suitable site to download the correct software for my model TCL, i have tried the TCL site with no luck, so the real question is can anyone HELP point me to a reliable source i can download...

Troubleshooting Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display
                  by nicktasios
I recently picked up a Quadra with a Apple Multiple Scan 17 Display. The Quadra was not working, it clearly had corrosion from leaking caps so I replaced them and luckily it chimed and worked properly.

The next problem to tackle was the screen. Sometimes it turns on and off multiple times before finally turning on, and then it sometimes turns purple. After waiting some time, without doing anything, it regains all colors. Another symptom is that it sometimes seems to momentarily blink.

Also, not sure if this is related, but sometimes, after experiencing these problems,...

Hello everyone, I wish you a happy day.

I have a Dell Latitude 7480 laptop that has a problem with freezing during the Windows loading process. If it manages to boot up, it becomes very slow and doesn't load anything from the desktop.
