    Identify and Fix Dead BIOS?

I got an ASUS and an ASRock board that power on but doesn't light up the screen. All fans are working, tried it with a new CoolerMaster SilentPro M500, tried different CPU and RAM on a workbench but still nothing happened.

    ASUS:
Baked the ASUS (Got no hot air rework station yet). No recap (No bulging caps found).
But still nothing on the screen and no beeps even when the RAM or VGA removed.

    ASRock:
Rinsed it with thinner and replaced all the caps.
Same problem with ASUS but sometimes it would beep if the RAM removed and sometime it would POST and stop at "Initializing controller" or whatever (I forgot what it says, it's too fast and I was too furious to read it).

Is this a BIOS problem? What are the symptoms for BIOS problems? How to fix or flash a dead BIOS? I think a BIOS troubleshooting info list would be great for future diagnostic and repair. If anyone know anything about these BIOS problems and solutions please post it here. Thanks everyone.

Both could be a Bios problem but more troubleshooting would be required to really find the problem. I would use a POST test card and see where that leads before I did anything else.

I've tried everything, believe me (read my post again). I do thinking about buying a good POST card.

ASRock use onboard video, ASUS use discrete video.

I've found this, this and this. Too bad it's out of production now. Haven't tried the manual way though, got no SPI header cable yet.

Is the chipset died? What are the symptoms of a dead chipset?

Re: Identify and Fix Dead BIOS?

hi.. looks like the bios is borked ..no beep ..no sign ..just spin of fan
i succesfully managed to bring back maximus formula motherboard that suffer from dead bios ..just fan spinning ..no beep
i flashed the bios through SPI header on motherboard using diy spi flasher (from parallel/lpt port to spi header) ...read ..identify ..unlock ..erase ..program
finally maximus formula got back again ..alive as normal board ..
so ..if you have SPI header on that mobo ..do it for experience
here is my simple spi programmer ..based on the site you linked
          part list :
          - parallel to serial idc 10pin
          - 4x 120/150/270ohm resistor 0.25w/0.5w
          - cwsdpmi (program need to run spipgm2)
          - spipgm2.exe
          - motherboard with parallel port ( use old trusted abit nf7-s)
          Attached Files

I corrupted the bios on my toshiba laptop a few weeks ago.
I used a method called crisis recovery which required just a floppy usb drive. This site here http://punj-technology.blogspot.com/...-recovery.html

            recovered my dead laptop.

asus have a bios recovery feature in case you brick it, check the manual for the correct key to press at boot.

With ASUS, not everything is quite so simple. I will show you my way. It may be longer or harder but it is the right way to do it in my humble opinion.

For example, you can have 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all being the same model, all of which will have different BIOS versions.

I will give you an example and my version of preparing BIOS from ASUS website and in the process I am always cleaning Intel ME while doing it so you have fully cleaned BIOS, no DMI data, no password, nothing.

This is the picture of 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all of them being X555LD...

ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI - BIOS Help
                by grimacelord
                Hello,

I have spent the last hour on this and I guess this is just over my head, so here I am.

I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard here that needs to have the BIOS updated in order to accept the latest CPUs.

The BIOS chips seem to come as a set of two: GD25B64ESIG and GD25B128ESIG. My guess is one of them is a fail-safe for the main BIOS? I really don't know. Or one of them is ME and other is BIOS? I don't know.

Anyway, I took dumps of both chips and then downloaded the latest update for this motherboard from ASUS's website...

ASUS ROG Ally X - (Handheld Gaming PC)
                Model No: RC72LA
                Serial No: SBNVKD001014459

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...

                ASUS TP500LA BIOS request/repair/merge?
                by jbonavita
Hi, my laptop wont boot at all
With original bios no POST, only LED lights
With alternative BIOS from model TP500LN (flashed via programmer) the notebook works again
                Some issues
                A- with bios from 500LN, it won't update from bios of model 500LA (from 500LN v203 to 500LA v300)
B- If updated from 500LN version 203 to 300, the battery stops being recognized

                Things I tried

1- Update / clear ME: Took the non working bios, made a backup, and did this: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...theory/trouble...
