    antivirus update fuckups

mcafee rolled out dat 4715 on friday which falsely identified many important files as W95/CTX virus including excel.exe. They rolled out 4716 shortly after but some sys admins had a nice weekend.

    the long list of files

maybe its a good time to check your scanner is set to quarantine not delete files. another vendor could screw up like that.

That is too funny! My old employer uses it (huge retailer) and rolls out the definitions sometimes several times a day. Must ring 'em to see what happened.

Well, a renewal date of December 29, 2029 is overkill for the average user.

There is a crack for Norton AntiVirus 2002/2003 to have such a renewal date somewhere on the Internet, but its use in my opinion is illegal, since if someone is using that crack, then they're not paying.

The image that I posted was a modified image, I have the original. It's at a reasonable renewal date of March 15, 2007.

            Here is the original image:

There is a crack for almost anything if you are that way inclined.

I was actually stating that the NAV "Corporate Edition" does not have expiration, not that you should circumvent expiration.

                  and now its symantec's turn

Symantec's Norton security software began cutting AOL users from the internet last week after a faulty security update judged that AOL traffic was malicious.

Norton has been a joke since v2003 rolled out, and McAfee's consumer products are even worse. If you want a real anti-virus suite, www.eset.com has it. You're welcome in advance.

Have used AVG free edition for more than one year now and it really does a good job ofcourse pro-edition can do much more but free edition got most of my needs.

                          Re: antivirus update fuckups

i think i will pass on AVG. i installed it once and got the most significant infection on a pc which i have had for a while.

                          https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...&highlight=avg

most of the time i deal with adware not virii, symantec corporate 8.11, zyxel router firewall and attachment type banning and antivirus on the mailserver are ok.

i wont touch symantec 10 though, i trialled it but slowed down shutdown incredibly due to registry issue. i agree with CaysE's comments on the consumer versions of both the big vendors. especially with integrated firewall etc.

any more votes for nod32 or other solutions.

I belive most antivirus softs got their weak spots, I think you just
                            had bad luck
Most of my friends use AVG and they have never had any trouble so far.
Had to buy a new router this time a Netgear, I've had enough trouble with my old D-link which ended up in a bad smelling cloud comming up under my workbench

maybe but my time is precious. i do applaud avg's strategy of a free version though.

the netgear should be a good router, many of theirs are designed by zyxel. check the caps though, both companies choose the same crap.

did you figure out failure mode of the dlink? we would like some pics

On corp edition 10, it shuts down clean. I ran corp version 7 before 10, and version 7 was a heap of shit, especially with XP. It was always doing strange things. Version 10 on XP runs great. Version 10 on my win2k A/S machine does take a few minutes to shut down, but I installed it over flaky version 7, which may be part of the problem. On XP, it shuts down fast, like normal. The win2k machine gets shut down only when I need to change out hardware, so that's not very often. It took about 2 minutes for it to shut down last week when I upgraded the RAM from 1gb to 3gb. It left no nastygrams in the event viewer.

                                        Re: antivirus update fuckups

A new input. I have replaced many Norton AV installs over the years due to infections, replace with Kaspersky Personal AV. In the last week I have encountered two systems with AVG that were infected. One could not be updated, so I installed the latest version and a system scan revealed 34 infected files due to Trojan Downloader W32. AVG could not deal with these infections, confirmed by a second scan that indicated they were still present.

I removed AVG and installed Kaspersky Personal and a scan automatically disinfected or deleted the files as appropriate. I have found this product to be very effective, for years now it has been able to deal with every attack without resorting to quarantine or vault.

If anybody has doubts about protection I suggest they try Kaspersky: www.kaspersky.com

                                          Hi!
Went dumpster-diving and found a bricked Lenovo P14S in trash, few weeks earlier. Symptoms - no screen, no POST, no beep, just keyboard LEDs flashing on powerup. Mute button+LED was responding though, and the display self-test was still working (via the key combo Ctrl+Fn+Power held for some seconds, see the Service manual).

Incidentally, Windows 11 have recently started auto-flashing computer BIOS in our region. Even more suspiciously, Lenovo has released a BIOS update just few days before the PC was trashed. About a week later, the BIOS update image has been oficially marked...

                                          Hello to everyone ,

This is my first post here, and i would like to share with you a small story in case you can help me.

Docker Type-C Gen 2 - Model 40AS. Was given to me by a friend for free ,but with the problem that you cannot use the video output ports.

All ports work , USB , Ethernet, Type C ... but HDMI + Display Port don't work

I searched on reddit and google for problem similar to that, and a LOT of people had fixed this problem by updating the firmware. So i tried , i searched and found 1.1.13 utility and 1.1.20 utility that can help...

z490-f gaming bricked after bios update

I had to assemble a PC with this Z490-F Gaming motherboard and an i7-1700K CPU. Upon the first boot, the CPU LED was red and flashing. I realized that I needed to update the BIOS. I didn't read the ASUS notice that said, "Before BIOS update, please download Intel ME update tool from ASUS support site, and update ME firmware to Version 14.1.53.1649V1.1 to ensure optimized system settings." I updated the BIOS without doing this, and everything seemed fine until the system performed an Intel ME update and shut down permanently. My attempts to reflash it were unsuccessful. Searching online,...

this board suffered from a bad trackpad and bad keyboard after liquid damage; board was turning on no issues..
we've replaced the bad trackpad and bad keyboard no issues whatsoever.. during 2nd final checkup we booted to an external macOS and there started the critical update issue; it boots externally but to the internal SSD it shows critical update; tried Wi-Fi tried Ethernet tried Hotspot same thing..

Update bios EFCN58WW to EFCN59WW for solving The Connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended AC adapter

                                          I have a Lenovo Legion 5 15imh05a device that I bought used online. It came with a 20V 8.5A 170W charger.

                                          The BIOS version is EFCN58WW.

When I turn on the device, it displays the message:
"The Connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended AC adapter..."

The device rarely charges the battery, and even when it does, it doesn't show that it's charging.

                                          I've tried
