Re: GA-8IHXP
Just for the lols, I had to reply here that I am still using this box.
Also, after my last update here it was running 24/7 as a file server for about 5 years.
It still works beautifully as my mail server.
That's how electronics should last....Re: GA-8IHXP

Re: Cleaning Motherboards
Yep, that's it. I found it in the cleaning isle in Bunnings.
I got a 2 litre bottle for about $20.
I use it for nearly everything now (I like the root beer smell) and you don't need to use much either as you can dilute it quite a bit.Last edited by cods69; 01-12-2007, 07:36 PM.

Re: bad board?
Have you checked the DC voltages from the PSU when it's under load?
From memory its reg'd pretty tight and should sit pretty much right on the spec'd V.
I killed a PSU for my Dreamcast years ago and tried unsuccessfully to fix it for some time (still got it). Got a new PSU from LikSang and it has been fine since. Shame they are gone now.

Re: Cleaning Motherboards - ATTN SMOKERS!!
I had to post this. The Memorex remote I tested Simple Green on, is now working perfectly.
It's a clunky old CP8 Turbo manufactured May '90, but I love its scheduling features. Very handy and reliable for A/V automation.
It has not worked properly since about '92 when it had several instances of crap spilled over it. Ever since, it chewed batteries like nothing I've seen and operation was completely frustrating as it seemed like it hung often. The buttons never worked that well after the spills, either.

Re: Cleaning Motherboards - ATTN SMOKERS!!
Yep - Bunnings have a pretty reasonable range of Simple Green.
Got myself a 2L bottle of all purpose with a bonus foaming bottle for $20AU. Not too bad.
Gunna test it out on an old Memorex Universal Remote (from May '90 ) which got cola or coffee on the board making it flaky.
Very happy I could 'find' it, eventually.

Re: Cleaning Motherboards - ATTN SMOKERS!!
I decided to chase this up - emailed Aus distributor (CIPL Pty Ltd) and they replied....
I have actually checked Bunnings before (huge hardware store chain for those not in Aus), but I'll go there again and double check then report back....

GA-6VA recap
My folks use an old GA-6VA R3 for their basic net needs. It started playing up while I was there, not even getting past BIOS sometimes. Machine was cold.
I rolled my eyes at my luck and took it home for further diag.
It continued playing up at my place intermittently in the same fashion, even after swapping PSU's and stripping the board to ram/cpu/vga and checking for shorts.
Swapped ram/cpu/vga (found one of my spare cpu's dies in Memtest) but still no solid cause.
I didnt want to build a new system and set up Win with all their email stuff etc., so recap it...Last edited by cods69; 09-11-2006, 08:21 PM.

Re: What to swap on a GA-8IDX
I'd say the Sanyo's should be fine.
I have not heard of many (any?) cases of Sanyo's failing.

Re: Antec TruePower380 & the Fuhjyyu Syndrome
Exactly! Get creative with the way they are mounted. I do it with cramped jobs and never have problems.
If the legs are going to show too much, just cover 'em with heat shrink tube or the like to avoid exposure to stray conductive elements....

Have you tried RS Components?

They usually have good supply (in Melbourne) and have good brands such as Rubycon, Panasonic etc.Re: Antec TruePower380 & the Fuhjyyu Syndrome

Re: Need good PSU with Intel Aux 6Pin Power
Excellent - I have that warm and fuzzy feeling.
(the good type - nothing electrical)
Thanks again for your reassurance and help. Much appreciated. ...Last edited by cods69; 07-28-2006, 11:42 PM.

Re: Need good PSU with Intel Aux 6Pin Power
Just to clarify my own statement here, Silverstone DID reply less than 2 days afterward (Fransiskus) and they were very concerned.
I explained what happened to Fransiskus after it was sorted and they were very good about everything.
Most impressed.
So impressed I've already talked an associate to replace one of his business workstations PSU's (runs 2 shifts a day, 6 days a week doing Post-Production work) with the ST60F - he tells me the machine has never been so stable.

Re: Gigabyte 8IHXP
These boards came with variations of GSC, OST, GLuxon and Choyo amongst the Sanyo's (sometimes PaniFJ) (on the 2.1 revision anyway)
See https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=376 for my experience recapping this board. Still going strong.
Since recapping, it has never been so stable.Re: Gigabyte 8IHXP

Re: Need good PSU with Intel Aux 6Pin Power
You are all going to think I'm crazy.
I tested the PSU for over 12hours before finding the air flow was backwards by the usual 'hand behind the vent' test. The mesh was stone cold after hours of heavy use, there was positive air pressure in the case and I could feel warm air coming direct from the fan onto the CPU, proving (to me at least) it was going backwards.
There were no signs of it being opened at all (no scratches on screws) and the fan orientation shows the label as per jonnyGURU's pic http://jonnyguru.com/PSU/ST60F/....

Re: Need good PSU with Intel Aux 6Pin Power
Erm, can anyone tell me whether the ST60F should be pulling air INTO the case?
ie. Air enters honeycomb mesh - exits via fan onto CPU.
I've sent an email to Silverstone but no reply yet. There is nothing I can find on the website or in the instructions (specs) that states which way it should go, but it would be a first for me if this is the way it works....

Re: Need good PSU with Intel Aux 6Pin Power
From what I have read, it depends on the individual design of each boardmakers i850 standard. Apparently some don't need it at all, while others do need it depending on ram type/population.
I myself will not be taking any chances, using 2x256MB 1066, and it could soon be 1.5GB if I find just the right pair on ebay.
I've taken the plunge and got a Silverstone ST60F (thanks to some favorable reviews from both here and jonnyguru) , and am modding a 24-20 pin adaptor with an addon (Intel type) 6pin I scavenged...
