    Laptop screen cable holder

    I decided to be a tad adventurous today with my new Latitude D400 laptop and disassembled the laptop itself to see for any issues internally and also clean out the fan heatsink. Everything checked out A-OK.

    Except I have one question. The bit where the screen cable meets up with the LCD connector is held together with this piece of hard plastic that has glue on one side. Now this piece was so god damn stubborn to remove that I felt I was gonna rip the screen cable in half at one stage!

    Nonetheless it came off with some patience and slowly applying pressure from the top downwards. Nothing was broken so it's all good... mind you, even without any sticky plastic holder thingy, the grip between connector and LCD cable is really strong!

    When I went to re-assemble the laptop, I used some electrical tape instead of the hard sticky plastic thing... the plastic thing still sticks well but it was just too much of a hassle if I were to do anything in the future due to its stubbornness.

    Will I run into any issues in the future if I used electrical tape...?

    Trust me, I've fixed many other laptops and they usually use this orange clear sticky tape to create a stronger hold between LCD cable and connector... of which is even less insulated or durable than electrical tape.

    So far everything runs great after assembly!

    I do however love the fact that the top LCD lid bit is mg alloy metal! So durable and strong!

      Electrical tape can get sticky if it gets too hot. They're usually locking connectors on the back of LCD screens, so I don't even think it's necessary to reinforce it. Many laptops have nothing extra there at all.

      In other laptops, I've also seen masking tape used. Occasionally, I will use adhesive tape designed to be used in a thermal label printer. Seems to closely mimic the properties of some of the tapes I see used on laptop parts. Avoid your usual household scotch tape/cellotape and clear packing tape, as these can cause static.

          I think electric tape will be fine there.
          If you ever have to take it apart again and it's gooey then Isopropyl and a cotton ball will clean it right up.

              i never messed with my cable on my d400, so i have nothing... some things i do not mess with until i must.

                  Well the electrical tape that I used was high quality American made stuff (Polyken brand) that even has like these fibres to create extra strength. The roll itself is 15 years old and has been lying in my storeroom which gets hot and cold whenever it feels like it. The glue on this tape wasn't even sticky like that China made stuff I used to have. I have also used this tape in many applications and I don't see any gooey residue. I hope this does the job properly for the many years to come.

                          I'm just like that. I pull anything I get into bits to see how it's engineered/made and then put it back together again. Plus I had to clean the fan out cause it was full of doggie hair.

                                  But I agree laptops aren't one of those things I'd take apart for the hell of it. Too many screws and snap together plastic crap.
