Pulled polymer cap still attached to the MB

Got on hand a motherboard that has a small polymer cap knocked slightly out of place (still attached). It is just surface mounted (no holes) and due to other components in the area is next to impossible to de-solder using an iron. Would it have any chance to work if I manage to pull back the legs all the way inside?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I'm not so familiar with the inner workings of the polymer caps.

    no.
the cap is probably damaged internally

Funny, I was doing exactly this to "fix" "accidentally" broken LIQUID electrolytic capacitors...

... that was before I learned what ESR is...

Re: Pulled polymer cap still attached to the MB

If the cap is knocked enough that one of its leads is broken and/or not making contact anymore, just rip it out and use a regular radial leaded electrolytic cap with its leads soldered onto the spot of the SMD cap. Easy way to get this repaired without hot air.

Also, for stubborn SMD caps, I often find that removing them with brute-force is easier and (surprisingly) less damaging most of the time than trying to desolder them with an iron. My method is, put a flat head screw driver onto the lower plastic piece of the SMD cap and use a hammer to knock the cap off the board. This works only for SMD caps soldered to thick ground and power planes. Otherwise, you run the risk of ripping a board trace.

          Should I replace polymer capacitor?
          by chth96
a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...

Computer in question : Razer Blade 15 2020 Base Model

          BIOS CHIP: WINBOND W25Q128BV

          What I'm trying to accomplish:
I want the computer to properly boot with an external display with the attached display disconnected from the motherboard. I have a CH341A programmer and full capability of modifying the BIOS easily. I Have tried various setting changes to no Avail.

What I've tried thus far: Too much to note and I really dont remember everything I changed but here it goes.

          XBox 360 All Polymer Capacitors

As the title says, Xbox 360 Polymer Capacitors, replacing all on a Kronos 1 revision board.

I went over a thread here (Xbox 360 with blown caps) and gather some extremely useful knowledge!

If I have things right, I can replace them TO

          x9 : 1500uF 16V 10x20mm
          TO: 470uF Nichicon FPCAP R7

          x2 : 820uF 6.3V 8x12mm
          TO: 2.5V 820uF Nichicon FPCAP R5

On this revision, there are other 820uF polymer capacitors for GPU/CPU - I'll be replacing those anyway with the above FPCAP R5

What's a good replacement for the smaller...
This can be anything from game consoles to arcade games to anything else that doesn't really fit into any of the above categories. When starting a new thread, please put the make AND model of your device in the thread title. Also be VERY descriptive of your issue, that way you'll get the best answer possible!

FORD 1996 ECU RECAP: Aluminum - Polymer worth bothering?
          by Cartel
I will be pulling my crown vic ECU and recapping it. 3 in total, 47uf 16v x2 and a 10uf 63v
I hope they havent puked yet. I was thinking of replacing them with Aluminum - Polymer thru hole caps. probably 47uf 25v and 10uf 80v
They arent cheap. Anyone have any experience with them? Am I wasing my money on premium caps?

          Nichicon PLV series

          thanks
