• I went crazy a little over a month ago and bought new bleeding-edge hardware to run Linux as my main system. Amazingly, it actually works.

CPU: Ryzen 7 9700X
Motherboard: MSI Pro X870-P WiFi (the cheapest thing available with a PCIe x4 slot and the amount of USB ports I wanted, and it's still almost $300)
RAM: 64GB DDR5-5600 (Crucial base model - JEDEC and XMP timings are identical )
GPU: Integrated (yes, really)
Storage: 2TB WD SN850X, 8TB HDD pulled from the other system, LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray drive (I haven't loaded that custom firmware yet...

• Just about anything up through 3rd gen (ivy bridge) intel i3/i5/i7 (as well as the AMD FX series) has good windows XP support (remember many companies stayed on XP right up to end of support in 2014, since Vista was a flop, and it took several years for a lot of 3rd. party software to be compatible with/certified for Windows 7). You can theoretically install XP on Haswell (4th gen i3/i5/i7), but XP drivers for those motherboards are often difficult/impossible to find as XP support largely dropped off by that point. If using a dedicated GPU you'll also need to stick to a GeForce GTX960 or older,...

• LG Gram 17 (17Z90N-R) ADVANCED troubleshooting Power On Self-Test (POST)

My LG Gram 17 (LG GRAM 17Z90N-R 17Z90N-R.AAC8U1 i7-1065G7 CPU + 8GB Motherboard EAX68997002) does not seem to even get to the point to try to boot from media (the nvme SSD is fine, I verified it on a separate computer) or turn on the display.

I have tried basic troubleshooting steps, remove the battery, disconnect the display, remove the RAM card, connect an external HDMI display. The behavior is always the same, the laptop turns on, shows the keyboard backlight, starts the fan, then it turns off the fan/light briefly, it does this sequence multiple times, let's say 6-7 times. Eventually...

• Chieftec Dragon LGA1366 Build

I recently got ahold of a bright green Chieftec/Chenming "Dragon" case (I've always liked these cases, especially in "oddball" colors) and decoded to throw together a period correct-ish build.

• riparo: you surely ask yourself "so what to do?" , i think starting the screen self test will produce again tv protection... your only hope is that tcon SoC or surroundings ram/rom has bad soldering and them are driving bad the oled panel or simply commands MB to shut off (watchdog? or what else..), so the first thing for me is to try heating with hot air a bit some minutes but not so high temp. the SoC area, not a real reflow.. 3minutes for starting.. let't hope..
PS: are you able to see tickets of which is the manufacturer of the oled panel? it's important.. maybe is LG.. them...

• Re: Physically bending the T-Con board creates horizontal dotted lines on OLED55CXPUA

I apologize for taking long to respond. Finding time to work on this was tough this week!

Update

@davi Interesting, I was not able to find VCOM adjustment in the service menus though.

@diah Yes! I was able to get a service remote (I downloaded the android LG Service app, works well). So I tried what you suggested. I installed my replacement T-Con board and upgraded the firmware in attempt to make the t-con and main board have the same versions....

• Re: Physically bending the T-Con board creates horizontal dotted lines on OLED55CXPUA

Some similar models service manual says after tcon replacement must do a VCOM adjust, but i never seen it explained (pieces of poop), i searched also youtube but nothing.. this is much probably the right thing, not risky ones like downgrading, things made by geeks with no support and hard to do without years of knowledge.. if you want, try to access service menu and search for the VCOM stuff, do some photo eventually.. the tv needs a recalibration of VCOM, every oled panel i think has a complex...

Thank you. I'm probably gonna try and replace the RAM IC. I have a donor board which have the same kind of RAM just a 2GB one. This board has 1G chips.

Do you think I can replace with a bigger capacity one or should I get a same capacity one?...

You may have killed the ram, I killed it on a sony board a while back, tried reflowing at about 425 f, tried the board again, no sign of life at all, before the reflow it was partially working.

UPDATE

So I reflowed the CPU and the XD engine on the board, with no luck sadly. The graphics stayed exactly the same.

However, I thought I reflow the RAM next to the XD engine IC and while the graphics are still faulty, it became different, like no LG logo appearing. Could it be that the RAM became faulty and that's why it producing these weird graphics error?

Today's dropoffs:

HP Z1 27" AIO workstation xeon CPU @ 3.3GHz 8gb RAM no HDD. Seems to work fine.

LG 60" Plasma TV, doesn't power up.... I've dealt with these before, not hard to fix.

• Re: Anyone with experience repairing a bad MAIN board?

Ah make sense. With this uproc with onchip code, flash data, and RAM, main board can shutdown main CPU+memory+flash on standby. I was wondering why only 3.3v is present in standby mode on my same generation LG main board.

https://datasheetspdf.com/pdf-file/867884/Renesas/R5F100GEAFB/1

Should check if 3.3V in on chip VDD. If not present, need to find why missing.Re: Anyone with experience repairing...ith this uproc...

Scored these:

- Techsolo PC with a nice case that is in dire need of repair, specs below.
- Benq MK2442 TV Monitor - had bad Elite primary cap and even worse Hermei crappers on the secondary. Recapped the Hermei w/ Panasonic and Rubycons, and the main cap is now a UCC cap (forgot the series)
- a 2XL pair of camo trackpants that ain't anywhere near the 2XL size, more like S or L at best.
- a bunch of DDR sticks among which I got some nice PQI overclocking RAM (which seems to be considerably heavier than the GeiL sticks....

I have an LG RAM module. It's a 32MB PC100 module from a Compaq.

I didn't know Fuhjyyu had been around that long, and it's surprising to see a 300W power supply that's that old.

They were one of the two companies that merged to form LG (which stands for Lucky-Goldstar), though I haven't really seen LG branded ram either. They also made test equipment such as this oscilloscope (which was made just after the merger/re-name to LG so the label on the back says LG precision, while the faceplate still has the old GoldStar name, later production of these had LG faceplates).

I reflowed the RAM memory module, still same. I think, no need to reflow cpu at this point. Do you think, that eeprom binary can be damaged? I mean, everything works, it just restarts at some point.

@Diah: according to google, I was able to get inside hotel mode setup, but surprisingly, there is no Factory Reset option. So I will leave it like it is, try to use different source and cables in my friend's house, and if it won't change, ordering new main board is last chance....

• LG GRAM random bsod SOLVED

LG Gram 15Z980 picked up on Ebay for $200 (was sold as parts because no M2 drive and bios pw locked), but otherwise intact and working.

Threw a 500gb M2 in, and was able to install Windows. On Gram, Win activation is stored in the bios, so Windows was automatically activated. I still kept getting random bsod's. Also bought a pw and unlocked the bios.

Upgraded Windows to 11, still didn't solve the random & frequent bsod's. Cleaned & reseated all cables, RAM, etc... still getting frequent bsod's. Bought & installed a new stick of RAM, still getting frequent...

• Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Welp, some updates on my previous scores:

- gutted the Delux MT302 build for now. PSU is absolutely J-U-N-K. I mean it - it had a horribly hard time powering as much as a Sempron 3000+ and a 9550 from Sapphire, for God's sake! I fear to think what else that thing powered. Case is of rather okay-ish quality, found a 2010 datecode LG GH-series PATA DVD-RW (which is rather surprising, as I remember these were mostly SATA...?), as well as a 200GB PATA Hitachi drive. No SATA drives.
- Matsonic board is dead - seems the ITE SIO chip is...

• "Netburst Mercedes" - a rather simple yet "exotic" build

Figured I should make a own thread so as not to hijack Topcat's thread.

Just as the title says, this machine is basically a "Netburst Mercedes". From the case, all the way to the innards, IMO.

First, let's take a look at the specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-8IG1000 Pro w/ FGx BIOS (special BIOS revision made by AGFA for their dlab.1 MPU machine.)
CPU: Pentium 4 HT 3.00GHz Prescott - will probably replace it with a Northwood HT as this Prescott is literally HELL incarnate. Wish I'd be joking, but it's absolutely true.
PSU: revamped Deer/L&C...

Well, thanks for the tip.

Just polymerised the whole CPU VRM section and got rid of those rotten TMVs, with Fujitsu taking their place. 9x 560uF 6.3v, able to withstand even a Kentsfield Q6600.

The entirety of KZGs that were on the board were eradicated. I didn't take any risks in leaving ANY of them - I've previously had a MSI P965 Platinum - I initially recapped it to replace a few blown KZGs near the main PCI-E slot near the northbridge. Three months after, half of the board had blown KZGs from just sitting. Polymodded...
