are there bad caps on fax modems

    hi there all,

I get intermittent problems with my windows fax server.

it uses an internal pci faxmodem (agere chipset).

the capacitors on it are small and look ok; has anyone ever seen a faxmodem with bad capacitors.

the fax board is about 6 years old at this point.

    thanks

Yes many times, lightning tends to kill them among many other parts on the card. They are so cheap though its really not worth repairing them.

I've had many issues with the agere chipset modems with machines susceptible to lightning strikes / surges. I usually replace these with USRobotics or 3Com which seem to handle the surges better. I would strongly suggest some sort of grounded surge protector / battery backup solution as this will most likely happen again. If you continue with the agere modems, thankfully they can be found very very inexpensively. Good luck!
