ILO LCT27HA36 TV, no picture but sound

Okay, I was watching this Wal Mart special when the screen just went blank but it still had sound. The TV is about five years old. I unplugged the video cables from both ends and then plugged them back in, no change. I then unplugged the TV, held the power button for five minutes, let the power button go, then plugged it back in to the wall. Same thing, sound but no video.

It's an LCD TV; I don't have much experiance toying with these things but I remember something about some kind of lamp burning out in LCD TVs and I'm wondering if that's what happened here...

I can't find much info about this TV on thw web other than it's from China and it's a POS! Hell I can't even find any parts for it! If anyone can point me in the right direction in diagnosing it then I will be much appreciative!

If you need any more info just let me know. Thanks!

Well, it could be capacitor related. There are already a few people who have solved it by replacing the bad caps as per

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t156293..._just_stays_in

Folks here will advise AGAINST Radio Shack capacitors and prompt you to use Rubycon, Panasonic, or United Chemicon low ESR caps.

If you take apart your TV, post clear focused pictures and we possibly can help you out. Post your pics using after reading this.

Thanks for the reply, I shall take it apart and look at the caps, but I'm telling you this thing has perfect sound! Oh, and the green light stays on, the only problem is no video. When the TV went dark it actually looked like a lightbulb burning out, which got me thinking that there was a bulb that went bad.

Could the picture go out, the green light stay on, and the sound be perfect with bad caps? Like I said earlier I've never really tinkered with LCDs before - I fixed a Dell 1800FP LCD monitor (replaed the ICE2AS01 and re-flowed the solder joints in the diodes, all in the power supply), but the instructions were all over the web; it was an easy fix!

On some computers LCDs like my NEC 1700V (I don't know about TVs), there are electrolytic caps on the inverter board. They are separate from the logic card where the sound chip is likely to sit.

I understand exactly what you are saying about ther perfect sound and everything. So it all depends on the layout of the TV.

Even if it is not capacitor related (which is why I said "could"), people will want to see pictures of the insides.

          Diagnose your TV properly!

Is the backlight lit? (press on the LCD gently) or look at back of LCD with back off (careful with live power).

Can you see anything on the LCD while on? with flashlight carefully on the LCD (take care, LCD surface covering is plastic that scratches easily).

          Cheers, Wizard

I'm gonna take the back cover off and see what I can see. Apart from bad caps, is there anything else specific that I should look for? Thanks!

I pressed on the LCD screen gently like you said, there was nothing, no response.

I then shined a flashlight on the screen, I saw fleeting parts of the broadcast picture when I did this.

That means the screen itself is fine, it's the CCFLs or inverter which went out. If white had a pinkish color for some time before the failure it's the lamps, if they just plain went out, it's the inverter. My money goes on bad caps in the inverter.

No, the picture just suddenly went out, like the TV was shut off, but the green light was still on and the soiund was perfect.

Okay, I found bad caps in the power supply (is that what you mean by inverter <<<NOOB!). The part number on the power supply is MLT168A.

I've attached some pictures of the power supply. The last two have the bad caps. Should I stop here or keep on digging? Thanks all!

We would probably like pictures of ALL your boards. The two bad caps may not be all that is bad.

edit: Some designs have their inverter and power combined on one board. Some are separate. Just depends on the manufacturer.

Okay, I attached photos of the mainboard and the RF board. The mainboard is new, it was replaced last year under warrantee. The HDMI-IN in the mainboard stopped working, so they replaced the whole board. I'm not seeing any more bad caps on these two boards.

I'm having a little difficulty going any deeper. The metal panel under the mainboard and RF board has all of the screws out but is not budging! There must be hidden screws somewhere but I'm having a humdinger of a time finding them!

Well, don't wreck the TV on my account.

From a quick look I spot one green picofuse on your board. It wouldn't hurt to quickly measure all your fuses to ensure they are all good (0.3 ohms or less).

Actually, it is not a dumb question. I am too tired today to go back and count, but I think I have been asked this question in one variation or another at least 5 times this last week.

I circled it in red on your picture. There may be more, but you have the best view to find them all. A open fuse may also be the reason you don't see the backlight come on (in addition to bad caps).

Thank you, I'll measure the resistance in that fuse in the morning. I only wish that there was a website called BadRotors.Org so that I could repay the favor (I'm a mechanic by trade)!

Let us know if you need help measuring the fuse. Measuring resistance should always done with power off and unplugged. The big difference is you have the tools to replace a capacitor or fuse while I don't have the tools to do rotors.

I like watching ericthecarguy youtube videos. I have had my rotors replaced and machined over the life my car at least a couple of times.

BTW, no one has mentioned it yet, but most here recommend recapping all your capacitors since a couple were bad. After some more diagnostics, we can discuss that later when you make a parts list.

I'd suggest replacing every electrolytic cap on the power supply board. Those Decon caps look like candidates for the badcaps list, and I'm not sure what else is in there.

One other point. Because of the way you took that first picture, those two bad caps stood out perfectly. Heck, I can even see the dust on the coils!! The last picture showed the manufacture's name. The rest were unneeded.

That's why I avoid TVs with names like Haier, Ilo, Insight, Memorex, Viore, Element, Emerson, etc. They are slapped together in China of the cheapest components available. They are sold by the container load with a very limited warranty, and no service information available. The distributor sells them and promises to replace any that fail within a certain period - typically 90 days. They MIGHT have a deal with a parts swap operation where any TVs that fail are disassembled, defective boards identified, and replaced with still working boards from TVs that had other failures "Factory refurbished".

I just did a quick check on prices from a major national retailer. Here is what it costs for a 32" 60Hz LCD TV. The first three will have some sort of service organization and service literature; I would expect a 1 year warranty. The last four I'd expect a 90 day warranty, and at best you have to ship it back to the "factory" for replacement.

                                    Sony $449; Samsung $398; LG Electronics $374; Viore $349; Vizio $349; Viore $319; Emerson $309

When you go to test the fuses,I would suggest using the diode setting on the meter. It should make a continuous beep if the fuse is good.On the ohm setting, the reading you get might be because of nearby components, which might make you think the fuse is still good, but it isn't.I hope this helps.Thank You very much!

Okay, I found bad caps in the power supply (is that what you mean by inverter <<<NOOB!). The part number on the power supply is MLT168A.

I've attached some pictures of the power supply. The last two have the bad caps. Should I stop here or keep on digging? Thanks all!
You need to replace all the caps in that PSU.
Those Megmeet PSU's get HOT and are known cap blowers.

I recapped an Akai LCT2785TA a year or so ago.
                                        Same PSU.
Your other boards look darned close too.
I think it may be the same TV with different plastics.

I replaced 100% of the PSU caps and everything down to and including 6mm on the other boards.
                                        Was a LOT of caps..
