Repairing Vizio P42ED PSU Board 53a

OK, since my first repair went well, I am moving on to my next project. This is a PSU board (53a) from a Vizio P42ED 42in Plasma EDTV. These boards are well known for early failures. I have counted a total of 37 caps. Out of these 37 caps, I am going to replace 31 of them. I am going to avoid replacing the 6 largest caps at first. I have tested them (sort of) and feel they are still functional. Not to mention that I have received advice that larger caps are less likely to fail than the medium to small sized caps.

On to some pictures so you all can see what I am working with...

As before the first step is to ID and spec the original caps and make a list.
Step 2 is to make a cap-map [before removing caps] so if your project gets interrupted and you have to come back later you have a record of what was what.
Step 3 is to compare the list to the map to make sure you didn't miss any.
    - No one around here has ever missed a cap on their map or their BOM and not found out until after the cap order was 'in'. [~~ RIGHT!~~]
    .
When I know the brands involved I'll point you to the data sheets so you can spec them out yourself.

Don't forget to indicate polarity on your map.

Just FYI: #34 and #35 have plastic on top that's held on by the sleeve.
The plastic will bulge even if the caps itself isn't so you have to push on the plastic with your finger to tell if they are bloated underneath the plastic.
The plastic is just there as insulation because in some applications the top of the cap could cause grounding problems with nearby parts.

Re: Repairing Vizio P42ED PSU Board 53a

Some of the caps are in hard to see spots, so my plan was to map out the caps (I simply use the full res photos), verify the PCB polarity notations, and then remove the caps I want to replace. Since I have stickers on each cap, I know where they belong.

After I have all the caps out, then I can identify all of them in a list and post them here. I think they are mostly Samwha caps. Most of them are too close together or too small to read their specs. I will have the list of caps and specs shortly.

          That works.

Here is Samwha's e-cap product page.

If you find one that isn't there check their 'discontinued products' list.

Now, should I simply replace with the exact same caps? I have not heard bad things about the Samwha brand, but this is a well known chronic issue with this particular model of PSU. I am wondering if switching brands would be advisable?

Re: Repairing Vizio P42ED PSU Board 53a

No, you look in the data tables for Samwha WL, RD, RG for those caps and find the Ripple and ESR.
If ESR isn't there just use Ripple.
Then you find caps of a good brand that meet or beat those specs.

              That's what this was:
              http://www.samwha.com/electric/templ...product23.html
Click on the series name and the pdf specs sheet will come up for that series.

Re: Repairing Vizio P42ED PSU Board 53a

I can't seem to find a datasheet for the discontinued RG series. They only note that the RG series was replaced by the RD series. I have found the ripple for every RD model that would match up with the RG model. However, there is no RD model that would match #22. What should I do now?

I could only find ripple values for most of the caps (RD & RG). So now I am looking for recommendations on replacement caps.

Small change of plans. They were out of stock on the first line item (#1-2), so I substituted the HE series instead. I hate waiting for backorders.
