Good day folks. So I ended up working at a new place which mostly fixes Sonys among other things....a brand which I'm unfortunately not very familiar with and also not very fond of....at all, in fact - junk IMO. My job now mostly consists of replacing faulty boards entirely, since they're covered by warranty and the head office or whatever, located in the capital, sends them to us in exchange for the defective part - that's fine.
However being the only "authorized" Sony center in the city, we also get quite a lot of Sonys which are past their warranty date and are thus not eligible for the replacement parts program, unless of course the client agrees to pays for it, which is obviously not happening - not at such high prices. So we're stuck with quite a lot of unfixable TVs which we have no choice but to scrap because the clients typically don't pick them up after being told they're irreparable.
Sony provides us with an online platform which we can access for firmwares and service manuals and updates and whatnot, which sounds like a good thing, but that's not a whole hell of a lot because there's times when the information is pretty useless and generic and not what you'd expect from an "official" service manual. For instance, check out this TV: when the chap brought it in, the set would come on and display something for a little while, but then it'd display all sorts of lines and pixels and crap on the display which made me think it's a faulty main board rather than the panel because it happened instantly instead of "fading" in. Funny thing is that I carried over to a nearby table after it was dropped off, plugged it in again to show it to my coworker and now the thing no longer turns on AT ALL....what a POS
Popped the back off, logged onto our support platform, found the appropriate service manual and began troubleshooting...or at least I was HOPING I'd troubleshoot because like I said, this is one of those instances where the service manual is far from comprehensive: no schematics and very bland descriptions like "no standby ? Check Fuse X"...yeah, thanks Sony, I believe we may need more than that at what claims to be an authorized repair center...makes me feel like they do this on purpose so you have no choice but to send them in to their head office so THEY can fix them and resell them, instead of giving someone else a try. Even if my brief knowledge tells me that a buck controller is faulty and needs replacing, where are you going to find such a thing ? You can't tell what it is and there's no silk screen on there either...
KDL-32W650A BTW...attached some pics of the board and the DC-DC converter area which I suspect is faulty since I'm not getting any power at all to anything (just 3.3v on some small ceramic cap), but there's no LED coming on at the front and no other signs of life....any "alternative" sources of Sonys ? I don't claim to know anything and perhaps there's someone out there who's dealt with this before and is willing to help others evolve....cheers.
