Insignia NS-46E340A13, no sound with 75ohm, turns itself on

Hello everyone. Just got an Insignia NS-46E340A13 with an interesting issue:

With the 75ohm antenna in hooked up it has no sound, but does have sound with HDMI and audio/video in (RCA jacks). I don't have headphones to check for sound there. It also turns itself back on after shutting it off with either the remote or power button. When I enter the service menu the "speaker select" option allows for no changes.

When I went to look at it the set would not power on in any way, but when I got it back to my laboratory here and plugged it in, it turned on. The picture is great, the backlighting looks appropriate and there are no other indications of problems save for no audio with 75ohm and turning itself back on.

I will be having a closer look sometime this weekend so I thought I'd post this now and see if anyone has any initial suggestions.

Make sure the TV is not set to SAP (secondary audio protocol), no audio options in the sound menu? did you try a factory reset?

I started messing with those settings after looking at your post and voila, audio shows up! Wondering if the set would now power itself back up I turned it off, it turned itself back on and audio is gone even after messing with the SAP settings.

I tried a factory reset with no change. I can't find any firmware anywhere for this TV, thought about trying an update, nothing on the Insignia website.

Always a shame when there's virtually no product support, found this, not familiar with them tho, can't tell from the ad if its just the dump they are selling or dump and chip, you would need an eeprom and programmer if so, programmer is about 3 or 4 bucks on ebay if you don't have one, might do the trick if it's an eeprom issue. https://www.tampaelectronicfix.com/p...0-ns-46e340a13

Yeah the lack of support from the manufacturer is not helping and I appreciate you sharing that. Just don't want to do any repairs without some experienced guidance and it looks like I've run out of road at this site. The more posts I've made on various TV's the less answers I seem to get.

Thanks again for the replies nomoresonys and thanks again for that link.

Board pix if that will help?

I pushed the power button then unplugged the IR/button board and the set still powers itself on.

Also tried a moderate amount of heat on the main board with no change in sound.

One more observation...when I switch from English to Spanish the speakers will sometimes make a buzzing sound until I switch back to English, then all's quiet.

Check voltages at cn902, I think the 12 v are the ones that provide sound.

I checked and there is 12v present at the power supply and the main board.

The 12V is OK because you do get sound with HDMI input.
Does this TV have RCA (RED/WHITE) audio line out?

Thanks for the reply budm, here's a pic of the RCA jack ID's. Never seen Pb and Pr, would those be outputs? I plugged the converter box I use for DX'ing in to the L, R and video jacks and it had sound/video.

Thanks for the link, I had a look at that last night trying to self-help. Sound like an incompatible or problem cable box on that thread. I'm pretty sure my problem is the opposite but I'm not sure. Mine has sound with accessories and none with the 75ohm in.

Those are Input for Component Video + L/R Audio.
At this point it seems to be something in the audio Tuner section since you were able to get the Audio when switching the SAP.
It may be FW problem. I believe these day Insignia are made by Hisense.

What stood out to me was that they had to keep going into sound settings and making adjustments every time they switched inputs. "I have the same problem on a Insignia 22" LCD. You need to reset the input source to component every time you turn on the TV. The video will come on when you turn on the TV but not the sound until you go into the meu and reset the source input to component as edellen suggested"

The thing is now when I switch to Espanol the speakers start this buzzing noise that changes pitch. The minute English is selected the buzz stops.

I did find a speaker with a headphone compatible jack and the sound is the same as above.

When I first looked at it, it wouldn't turn on at all. The first thought that came to my mind....eeprom, or corrupted firmware. The buzz/no buzz on SAP along with coming back on by itself seems to confirm that? It comes back on with the IR/button boards unhooked.

If I turn it off manually, unplug it and plug it back in it will not turn on until I command it.

Do you think a FW update might help....if I can find a download? I've yet to locate one.

EDIT: The service menu has a "EEPROM INIT" command? on it. Is this a repair utility by chance?

FW may help but not easy to find since the TV is made by third party, which ever one can provide them at the lowest price.

Thanks budm, so would a pre-programmed EEPROM replacement put me ahead of the curve here? I thought about getting some freeze spray and cooling it off to see if the problems disappear, just have none around.

Just in case it's related this artifact shows up after the set is on for a while. Change the channel and it disappears then comes back after a while. The picture seems a bit grainy at times too.

                                      It's got some gremlins.......
