Sony KDL-32L5000 Will Not Turn On

Ok this is another that was surged by lighting at my parents house.

I checked the PS and found nothing bad. It has the 3.3V STBY. I jumped the 3.3V to the PS_ON and the power supply switched on. While it was jumped I hit the power button and the TV turned on. While it was on, I pulled the jumper out, and the tv stayed on. I then hit the power button, and turned it off. Of course it would not turn back on. I then checked the 3.3V, and it was gone. I unhooked the main board, unplugged the TV, let it sit about 10 minutes, and then plugged back in. The 3.3V was back, but when I reconnected the main board it disappeared again. If I jump the PS and switch it on before I connect the main board, the 3.3V stays, and the tv will turn on with the power button. I have no idea where to even begin with this one.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jumping the StBy and PS-ON with the Main Bd connected would damage components on the Main Bd. So Pwr Bd was probably good in the beginning and you had a Main Bd problem.....Since probably when you did 'your experiment' the picture and audio were good...then Main Bd still remain suspect.

Ok, before I jumped it I had the 3.3V stby. However when I pressed the power button I had 0V on the ps_on pin. So apparently there was a problem with the main board from the start. The question is what? Now I have checked everything that I know how to check on the main board. Which brings me here.

        Service manuals:
        http://elektrotanya.com/?q=showresul...oria=&kat2=all

Troubleshooting the main board down to component level is not going to be easy. You can down load the service manual and start checking the fuses on the main board if they have them, look for burnt parts, checking DCV, etc.

Thanks budm. Is it possible that EEPROM can cause it not to turn on?

May be or may be not. How about other command signals beside PS-ON? Lighting can damage many components on the main board, the surge may have come through the HDMI ports.

Re: Sony KDL-32L5000 Will Not Turn On

So far I have found 12V, 5V, and 3.3 volts on the main board. I also checked the composite intputs, the AV inputs, and the tv/cable input. All of those are working. I have not had a chance to check the HDMI inputs, but when I toggle thorugh all the inuts with the input button on the tv, it shows the "no Signal" on the screen for all inputs.

Re: Sony KDL-32L5000 Will Not Turn On

Ok I was checking the voltages again this morning. I found that when the cable from the power supply to the main board is disconnected the power supply has the 3.3V stby.

When I connect the cable from the power supply to the main board, the voltage on the stby drops to .4V.

Disconnect the cable from the power supply to the main board and the stby remains at .4V.

Unplug the power supply from the mains for a few minutes, plug it back into mains, and the stby is back to 3.3V.

Reconnect the cable from the power supply to the main board, the relay on the power supply clicks on, then clicks off, and then the stby drops back down to .4V, and remains there until the cable from the power supply to the main board is disconnected, and the power supply is unplugged from mains again for a few minutes. Then plug the power supply back to the mains, and the stby is back to 3.3V

I hope the way I explained that is understandable.

What is going on here? Is it a power supply issue, a main board issue, or both?

Back to this Sony. I determined the eeprom was fried on it, so I replaced the main board. The tv will still not turn on. The stby led is not lit. I checked the voltages on the power supply. All voltages are present. The stby is 3.3v, and the P-on voltage is 2.75v. Any advice what to check next?

I suggest unplugging the ir board. These models are well known for some smd caps on it shorting and not allowing the tv to turn on.

With all the boards connected what voltages do you have at the two connectors.

                        For example
                        Code:
                        CN6201
Pin Number Pin Label Pin Voltage
                        1 Power_On 3.3V
                        2 AC_OFF_Det 0.0V
                        etc

                        CN6202
Pin Number Pin Label Pin Voltage
                        1
                        2
                        3
                        etc

You need to remove the shield on that inverter board so you can take the pictures and upload them.
As you can see the bundle of cable on the inverter board is split into to two set of wires, one set goes to the power supply board to get the 24V, the small set with 3 wires are for the BL-ON and the Dimming control which goes to the main board.
                              Is this the board?

No backlights. I tried the flashlight test, but I didn't see an image. That board on shopjimmy looks the same, but I will post pics of it in just a minute. BL-ON (or ENA, or INVR ON) and DIM pins should be on the inverter board.
You should inspect the caps and the fuses on the inverter board.

So if you put the original board back in you can force the TV to power up with both backlights on and picture on screen, yes?
Willing to help but I'm no expert.

Yes I can. With the old main board, I had no ps_on voltage at all. It doesn't make any sense, cause with the new main board I now have ps_on voltage, but the tv will still not turn on.

I put the old main back in, and jumped it again. Pic below. Now with the jumper installed, it will turn on and off with the power switch. However if I remove the jumper, and plug the tv back in, the main board causes the ps board to loose power to all the pins on the CN6201.
