    Vizio VF550M Main Board Problems

I found a Vizio VF550M 55" 120Hz LED TV on the curb set out for trash pickup, I grabbed it hoping it was just bad capacitors as I've done this repair on many items over the years. However quick inspection showed that none of the capacitors looked puffy. We also just had some bad lightning storms, so I'm starting to think it might have been a surge.

I am 90% sure the main board is toast, but would love the opinion of a more experienced TV repairman. I'd also like to know if you think it's worth gambling on a replacement main board or if this thing is likely to be a moneypit (more bad components to come)

The amber standby light comes on, but pushing the power button doesn't fire the relay.

Main filter cap is ~168V (as expected for 115V mains).

I disconnected all boards and jumpered STBY to the PSOn and the relay fired.

Measured 5V, 12V, 18V and 24V rails all good (w/ multimeter don't currently have scope access).

Plugged everything back in and noticed one of the two HDMI switch ICs is getting very hot even with the system on standby (probably gets standby power to turn on when a connected device is turned on). The LDO feeding it was also getting warm. I inspected the immediate area for FOD but found none, so I desoldered the HDMI switch (I have the skill to replace if needed) hoping that it was just pulling the rail down (didn't check first because I am a dumb-A).

The LDO is operating correctly and nothing is heating up, but the power button still does not cause any voltage to be applied to PsOn. I wouldn't expect the missing HDMI switch to matter, so I'm guessing something else is bad.

Anything else I should try before ordering a replacement main board?

Is it even worth trying to replace the main board (found one for $120, 15% restocking free + return shipping)? I'm scared I'm going to get the main board replaced and find out the all 3 of the other boards are toast, is this common?

    Thanks for your comments!

Re: Vizio VF550M Main Board Problems

I'm only a potterer but did you main caps voltage increase too when PSB jumpered and did backlight come on. If so then I would think main with problem not sending ps-on voltage back and the tcon would be a ? mark for later - but does it get its 12v now?

Re: Vizio VF550M Main Board Problems

      Thanks for the suggestions.

OK if the main board is connected and Tcon disconnected the backlights don't come on, all of the supplies (5,12,18,24) are at rated voltage and every cap I could get to on the main board has either 5V or 3.3V on it and nothing is really getting hot (second HDMI switch is probably warmer than it should be with no signals).

If I disconnect the main board both backlights come on, intensity looks good, no obvious cracks in the LCD panel.

I would say main is toasted. Most likely surge came through hdmi or coax spiking main. I would start with a known good main and worse case in the end the t con. But I highly think the t con dead.

I'm hoping you mean highly doubt the t con is dead?

Check the lvds signal with an oscilloscope. That will tell you if the main or the Tcon is bad.

              Sony xbr-65x900c main board issues?
              by jb_Bak
Hey guys great forum glad to have found it. I bought a Sony XBR 65X900C cheaply because it didn't work. No signs of life at all not even a light/led. All I hear is a brief high voltage sound when I throw the power to it.

Didn't see any obvious signs of damage so right away started checking voltages. This is what I see:
Power Board Connector that goes to Main board
              CN6401
              Pin 01 NC
              Pin 02 NC
              Pin 03 "BL_ON": 0V
              Pin 04 "N/C"
              Pin 05 "STBY 3.3V": 3.5V
              Pin 06 "GND": N/C
              Pin 07 "AC_OFF"...

Issue: No Power, Then Rebooting After Main Board Change

Short answer: replace main board and power board
Technical answer: replace main board and Q306 & Q307 on power board.

              Long answer:

TV wouldn't turn on. Power switch was fine which means the main board isn't processing the power on signal. Replaced main board. TV turns on now but randomly reboots. Bad main board? EEPROM? Tried to pull main board and got a shock touching the corner of the board. That's weird. C334 (450V 10uf) capacitor is still holding a high charge....

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

Is it possible to upgrade from a Vestel 17MB97 main board to a 17MB110 Main board?
              by cheeky2
I suppose the real question is whether the existing pinouts from ether a 17IPS71 psu are cross compatible with a 17IPS12 psu? If they are then the exchange of the main boards should have no issues providing the screen is compatible with both main boards. Obviously you can change the screen configurations easily enough (providing you have the correct files) for the main board. Why may you ask would I do this? Well a lot of the smart features are no longer working on a Hitachi 48HBT62U main board I wish to give it a new lease of life!
Obviously the same LVDS connector for the screen connection...

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...
