  • Re: What am I doing wrong desoldering?

Removing DIP (dual row) through hole parts is always a nightmare... often you can choose to keep the part intact or the board intact, but not both; it's so easy to lift a pad. If your not trying to salvage the part snip some legs to make it easier.

I've had best luck with my Aoyue 968A+ rework station and 853A board heater, put the board upside down on the heater at about 150C then once its up to temperature work the hotair in circles around the chip until it falls free.

Assuming that's not in budget, I second adding...

    Thanks for the suggestions.

OK if the main board is connected and Tcon disconnected the backlights don't come on, all of the supplies (5,12,18,24) are at rated voltage and every cap I could get to on the main board has either 5V or 3.3V on it and nothing is really getting hot (second HDMI switch is probably warmer than it should be with no signals).

If I disconnect the main board both backlights come on, intensity looks good, no obvious cracks in the LCD panel.

  • Vizio VF550M Main Board Problems

I found a Vizio VF550M 55" 120Hz LED TV on the curb set out for trash pickup, I grabbed it hoping it was just bad capacitors as I've done this repair on many items over the years. However quick inspection showed that none of the capacitors looked puffy. We also just had some bad lightning storms, so I'm starting to think it might have been a surge.

I am 90% sure the main board is toast, but would love the opinion of a more experienced TV repairman. I'd also like to know if you think it's worth gambling on a replacement main board or if this thing is likely to be a moneypit...

  • Re: Looking for new soldering station/iron

Oh I should also mention I have used lot's of Hakko's and Wellers... The Aoyue wins in functionality and knocks it out of the ballpark in value.

I haven't had much experience with their lower end products but I swear by the Aoyue 968A+ SMD Digital Hot Air Rework Station. I have one at home, and had 2-3 of them at my last job. At least 3 other people have bought them on my recommendation and love them... so much bang for the buck.

Based on this experience I would expect the lower end Aoyue's to do as well (many of them have higher Amazon ratings).

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hi,

Electronics engineer here, I have plenty of experience with new design, not so much experience repairing other people/companies dead designs.
