Vizio E502AR Nearby Lightning Strike

Hi,

A friend asked me to take a look at his E502AR. It stopped working after a storm, so it looks like a power surge may have got it.

The fuse was blown, so I replaced that. I didn't have any fuses with leads, so I made my own.

The two 150 uF, 400V capacitors have 170V across each of them.

There is no output on any of the lines running to the main board, including no 3.5V standby.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check next?

Disconnect the main board from the power supply to see if you will get the STBY Voltage.

Oops,

I forgot to mention in my post that I had tried that.

0V on the standby when disconnected from the main board.

Electrostatic pulse,

your gonna find fried silicon - probably cmos.
so suspect a bad fet or controller.

I've got to look at more options instead of just trying to look at the component level; It's just the cheapness in me.

For most of the TV's I've seen, the boards run about $60 each so I didn't bother looking yet. It doesn't take too many parts to cover that $24 power supply.

If you can't see damage, then it's safe to say that it simply got spiked...

Been there before in the mid-late 2000s (2004) with a 56K modem after a T-storm in western Windsor County, Vermont.

But, you saw something visible in your case, a blown fuse.
With the 56K modem, I can't recall there being a fuse where you can see the condition of it internally.

OTOH, I doubt many modems use a transparent fuse...

I'm beginning to think that usually only primaries get a transparent fuse...
