I just got one in from a uk seller with the panel modification done already and it played for about 3 hours tops and shut down. Traced it down to a bad backlight strip. Too much work for a subpar screen with a bad design. I certainly do not see where these led sets are more reliable than their ccfl counterparts. This is more of a hobby for me nowadays and I can pick and choose what I work on. One thing for certain is I won't work on anymore of these designs.

How did you trace the bad led strip ?
Did it start to visually go out ?

Did one of these over the weekend.
had to bridge the led connections with wire.
              and all was good again..

They are a pain for this fault.

Hi Zomi. I started to notice a slight flicker toward the bottom of the screen the night before. Woke up the next morning and turned the set on and it played for about 3 hours before the screen turned black. I proceeded to tear down the set and found a bad led in the bottom strip with the battery in series method. The power supplies in these sets seem to be reliable but the panels are horrible. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for in most cases.

Yes, you pay for a quality brand name like Toshiba (or should I say, ex-quality!) and they ship you a piece of Vestel trash, which you could find for £50 to £100 less elsewhere. Bastards!

                    I agree,
I think if you have working parts its better to break for parts than to fix to sell, i think you would prob get more for it..
Such a pain .. having to bridge the led connectors.. but its a good experience never the less.

Both of you are right. I did state that you get what you pay for in most cases. What really irks you is when you pay the price for a quality brand and get trash like this. I wouldnt really expect much out of a sanyo but i would for a toshiba. I have owned many toshibas and bought many for customers and never had any problems. The consumer is the one caught in the crossfire and suffers loss after the warranty expires. When i refer to the adage of getting what you pay for i am concentrating on a group of customers who purchase by price only. I have consistently advised consumers on which brands to purchase and it is like talking to a brick wall. You recommend a good product and they talk about purchasing some cheap chinese knock off tv. When a consumer is solely driven by price i have no remorse when the set breaks.

                          Hi,
I have the same problem with my lcd driver board. The red cap has no voltage. I have checked yellow cap and it has 24 V. Has any one schematic of this board, please?

it was these little connectors i gave them a clean now it works

Quite random that I stumbled across this post...

I just fixed a Toshiba 40L133b with the exact same fault.

Was the bottom connection between the 2 led strips.

I went a little further and hand modded all the connection so it doesn't fail in future.

Same problem here. Already fixed, at least so I thought, three months ago. It's going on the blink again today.

Can I ask you what wire you used to duplicate those connections?

It looks like the standard 0.5mm wire that Maplin sells in little bags. I guess that I need to do the same to my dad's 40L1333B TV. The LED strips do seem to be a rubbish design.

Heres a tip TURN DOWN THE BRIGHTNESS having it up kills the Leds in no time flat also causes the connectors to corrode faster.

Re: Toshiba LcD TV 40L1333b sound no picture

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this discussion.

I too have a Toshiba 40L1333B which suffered loss of backlighting. I followed the advice I read here, stripped it all down and removed the stupid bridge connectors. One was a little overheated and another was quite spectacular in its distress.

I had no wire available to bypass them, so instead I removed all the plastic bridge connectors, cleaned the contact areas on the LED PCBs, and applied a nice amount of solder to each. I then used a length of thin solder braid, heated and reflowed the solder so as to allow it to wick into the braid. Then cut off the braid so it provided a connection between the PCBs.

Then checked for continuity and for shorts to ground and between tracks before going through the hell of putting it all back together.

Frankly I did not expect it to work, but I was delighted to find it proved me wrong and it is back in use.

I left the industry in 1989, because I was unimpressed at the decline in quality I was seeing, and this seems to have proven me right, what a complete pile of 'fits-where-it-touches' junk!

Looking at the inside of this set it seems to me that Toshiba have given up making things themselves, and have just bought in some bits off the shelf and shoved them in a fairly nice looking cabinet. Perhaps this is usual these days, it certainly made me feel as if I had fixed it DESPITE its design, not because of it.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed, I deeply appreciate your time.

Have a great new year (it is now 03 01 16)

Two things to add to what I said before.

                                          1. If you strip down the display to do this job, you will encounter a number of sheets of plastic between the LED housing and the rear of the actual display panel. When you put these back you must ensure ether go back the same way they were removed as they pass light in one direction and tend to block it in the other.

                                          2. Watch out too for the power supply PCB, (the one mounted on the back, and in the middle of the display), as it has several capacitors that will hang on to a pretty impressive charge for quite a while.
