Sony KDL 46WL140 vertical lines that eventually go away

I have a Sony 46WL140 that has vertical lines when first turned on after being unpluggged for a few hours (See photo). After about 5 minutes, the lines go away.

After the lines disappear, the image is dark except for the left side and ghost images appear on the right side(see photo). After 15 to 20 minute, all problems go away and the picture looks good.

There is nothing obviously broken or loose. Any thoughts?

Can we see the screen shot? It sounds like typical bad tab bonding problem.

I agree, sounds like tab bonding. I have a Sony with tab bonding issue and I was able to jury rig it so it's use-able now. Still a semi annoying line of horizontal light colored pixels, but definitely watchable.

Thanks for mentioning tab bonding. I have researched that term and am now attempting to remove plastic and frame just enough to start pressing. Being mindful of the power of course.

You have to take off the front plastic housing and then remove the front metal frame to expose the tabs.

curious, when I had a bad tab bond, the tv come on was blotchy like your pic., then gradually got darker to just about black.

Looking at the screen shot, it may not be tab bonding.
Can you try flexing the screen to see if it will change.

Re: Sony KDL 46WL140 vertical lines that eventually go away

This aspect is all new to me, so please understand that I am experimenting more than following a guide to fix the issue.

I removed the plastic and have moved the metal back just far enough on the corners to put some thin cardboard shims in. The picture then looks great! For a bit.

When i tighten the screws the middle darkness and ghosting appear. Tapping on the loose screen does nothing, but pressing on the upper right corner changes the picture. I think I need to bend the screen slightly outward in the upper right corner to get a constant good picture.

A question: I am limited in getting to all the tabs by the metal connector from the heat sink to the frame. (See photo) I am really a newbie so I am asking what does the connector do? Is it a ground? Can I peel it back and reconnect it? If I can remove it, I can get to the screen so much easier to put in shims.

Can i remove it and what's the best way?

Thanks again. I feel I am almost there!!

more than likely its not all the tab bonds that are bad, try checking each one or at least the ones you can reach, see if the pic. changes.

Of course, one of the places that needs a shim is next to the foil connector. I am going to get a hair dryer to remove and then replace to give me more room.

Like I said, you have to pull the front metal housing off of the LCD panel to reveal the tabs in questions, then push at the tabs while the TV is on to figure out which one is bad. It was the top left tab on my Sony that was bad. I made some padding out of electrical tape and put it in there to constantly apply pressure to the tab. This has made the TV watchable again.

I am getting closer and closer. The top right tab is probably the main culprit and I have secured it with heat tape insulating foam. However, every time I put the chassis back on, walk away for an hour, turn it back on, I either get a few lines or a dark spot in the middle which goes away after a few minutes. I think I will secure all the tabs. All the suggestions are appreciated. I like the electrical tape padding. Inexpensive and readily available. The tab bond fix pics are awesome. Here we go again today!

can be tricky getting it just right, took me like 15 times tear n untear, to get shim just right, almost tossed it, on mine I could adjust the fine red lines out by adjusting screws holding frame on.

Not this year. The last time I did it the unbelievable chest pain that hit me when I submerged put a real scare into me. I now do towel duty and support the other crazies. But it was fun.
I'm putting more shims in. Again.
