Re: Vizio E550VL: Plug In = continuous on/off clicking

I have not been able to find anything significant that I can tell is wrong on the main board. It remains incredibly difficult to test without being able to power on and measure voltages.
My theory is that there is a failed component somewhere in the 5vSB circuit causing a send or short to PS_ON, but also causing an autoprotect to trip and shutdown power, thus the continuous cycling, even with PS_ON cut.

    Several questions:
    1) When I test 5vSB, whether under (simulated) load or just the (digital) voltmeter, the tester jumps to 9.25v - EVERY TIME - for a split second before settling at about 5v. I thought it was just an anomalous reading before the voltmeter 'settled down,' but is this normal? Or is it a possible defect in the PS? Can I test by using a Computer PS to power the main board 5vSB with the LCD PS disconnected?

    3) Can I cut 5vSB, and manually trip PS_ON to cut out 5vSB to the Main Board since that seems to be where the problem starts?

    2) The Vizio E552VL uses the SAME LCD panel (LC550WUB-SCA1) as the E550VL. My Main Board has an integrated TCON (Chip in the upper-left corner of the board?). The inverter boards are listed as interchangeable for E550VL and E552VL. If I get a main board for an E552VL that has an integrated TCON chip...Will it work? It is much cheaper than getting the E550 VL Main board, if I can find one at all. I know I may have to remove an extra USB and HDMI port, or modify the case, but the mounting points and board size appear to all match up...

    Thanks for any input!

Re: Vizio E550VL: Plug In = continuous on/off clicking

If the standby is power supply is not steady at 5V then the main board will not function, you can cut the ps_on so the main power supply will not be turn on (you do not need to have the rest of the power supply on for the main board to run, the main board should send out steady control signals out, the rest of the power supply that is turned on so you will have 12V for sound, and the PFC booster for the inverter circuits. Main board only needs that 5V to run. You can try external 5V power supply that can supply lots of current without going into shut down and then see which components will get hot or start smoking.

"Can I cut 5vSB, and manually trip PS_ON to cut out 5vSB to the Main Board since that seems to be where the problem starts?" forcing the power supply on by applying the 5V through resistor to PS_ON and BL_ON turn on the rest of the power supply is fine, it will just proof that the PFC and the inverter are working. You already done that in post 5.

Re: Vizio E550VL: Plug In = continuous on/off clicking

I got to test the TV some more, and this time it magically stopped blinking on and off! I am getting standby power. When I press the power button, I get 1 click, and power to the TV. HOWEVER, (if I remember right, I don't have my notes in front of me) I still get the continuous blinking on/off when I press the power button if the 24v supply cables is plugged into the PS. I can get the main board into 'on' state I have them unplugged.

MAIN POINT: After a minute or so, I smell something 'hot' and have to unplug the TV. I discovered that the HDMI chip is getting blistering hot while the TV is 'on.'
Is the opinion still that the main board (or component on it) is likely bad?

If i was in your situation i would look for a replacement main board it certainly sounds like the chip may be short circuit etc.

Re: Vizio E550VL: Plug In = continuous on/off clicking

A HDMI chip getting hot is a pretty common symptom of power surge damage entering through a HDMI cable, even if you did fix the other faults the HDMI ports would not work again. So I agree with Vince, I would look for a new main board.

I was thinking that as well. However, I don't have a hot air gun. Just a soldering iron. Could I get it off without damaging the rest of the board?

Re: Vizio E550VL: Plug In = continuous on/off clicking

I am happy to report that this DOES work and I got the TV functioning normally!
I was able to use a 3655-0352-0150 from a Vizio E552vl in a Vizio E550VL that uses LCD panel LC550WUB-SCA1.

All functions work, all inputs, digital and analog work! All I had to do was dremel holes for the extra ports on the back cover. I was able to pick up the board for $90, instead of the original replacement priced at $170. I also gained an extra USB port, and wireless (net yet tested) and wired connectivity and apps!

Thank you to all who assisted me!

Is it possible to upgrade from a Vestel 17MB97 main board to a 17MB110 Main board?

I suppose the real question is whether the existing pinouts from ether a 17IPS71 psu are cross compatible with a 17IPS12 psu? If they are then the exchange of the main boards should have no issues providing the screen is compatible with both main boards. Obviously you can change the screen configurations easily enough (providing you have the correct files) for the main board. Why may you ask would I do this? Well a lot of the smart features are no longer working on a Hitachi 48HBT62U main board I wish to give it a new lease of life!
Obviously the same LVDS connector for the screen connection...

I have a Vizio VO47L FDHTV30A. The picture works well, but the sound only works through the RCA output jacks. The sound does not work through the internal speakers or the headphone jack. The TV has a rapid clicking sound when the tv is on that occurs about 4 times per second. The clicking sound volume is fairly low and is not affected by adjusting the internal speaker volume level. The clicking occurs whether or not I disable the internal speaker through the Vizio setup menu. The clicking only occurs while the TV is on.

Any idea what is causing the clicking sound? Any easy way to...
