Whats The Most Dangerous 'repair'/thing you've found in a TV set?

I think mine was found on Friday last, and have some pictures at work,--which I'll get and post tomorrow.

An old LG Plasma, a 42 PDPV7 that I scrapped due to broken screen.

On removal of rear-cover I found that half of the PSU,--the area containing the PFC, rectifiers, main smoothing-blocks and the primary side of the supply had been packed very tightly with Cotton-Wool!

The mains input-fuse has fuse-wire wrapped around it and was also covered in this cotton-wool packing. The whole lot then was covered in a plastic sheet taped firmly in place all around.
--The stuff was even tucked in around the whole board under the edges.....

The PSU had finally quit due to overheating causing the board to distort to the point it touched the chassis causing a short--amazingly the mains-fuse had not failed, and I suspect a series-resistor had saved the day preventing a fire if the mains-fuse had gone!

The area of the switching-regulators and PFC fets of the board has carbonised and black, this poor thing must have been running like this for some time....

Whoever did this so-called repair--potch-up--requires a severe head slapping for this effort in a fire waiting to happen!

I thought I had seen most things--Until life throws another weird thing like this at me!

Can't wait to see the pictures! Sounds almost too horrible to be true.
Then again, people can do stupid things .

Sounds too stupid so as not to of been done on purpose, why would you otherwise? Did the previous owner have a so called friendly neighbour have a look at it and try and fix it???? that cotton would of acted as an accelerant in the event of a sparking component so very lucky it didn't but of course I'm only guessing, just why would you do that, why?

After a person goes through that much effort to destroy the set and possibly burn his house down why not just Bust the Screen too! He must have been mad at the set!

The ONLY reason I can see why this had been done--was maybe a buzz or whine from the PSU--prob due to some other fault.

It is clear the set had been running for quite some time with the wadding in place--even the tape around it had all sorta dried up and gone crispy!

Whoever did this--Was EXTREMELY lucky not to have had a house fire!

I'll have to get the pictures of this abortion next week--They are on a colleague's camera--who is off till Monday....

GRT60-145410 brick PSU, how much of a fire hazard is this thing exactly?
            by spleenharvester
I bought an Alpicool C20 fridge, which is a 60W compressor fridge that runs on 12V or 24V, which can come from either an AC/DC adapter from mains (240V here in UK) or a car battery. The fridge itself is really good quality, so I was surprised to find the power supply (DC14.5V, 4.1A) pretty questionable. Despite being 240V/1.5A the plug was fitted with a 13A fuse - concerning, but not all that uncommon for imported chinese electronics here. But when I felt how light the brick was I immediately said hell no and transferred the proprietary connector to a MeanWell GS90A12-P1M brick (this supply is...

Battery not charging in ASUS G532LWS Motherboard -> BQ24780S
            by cope
            Hi everyone,

I have been working on a no power issue with my personal ASUS gaming laptop. It went dead a few months ago.

            Some history:

Since then, I've found a blown mosfet on the GPU line which I replaced. It started up without a battery, then when I added the battery back it wouldn't start up again.

As a result, there were some blown components around the BQ chip. (The BQ chip itself - BQ24780S, the low side battery mosfet (shorted), and a resistor -> all replaced)

Now, with a new battery the system will start up and run off...

            Potentially Dangerous Vintage Capacitor?
            by Lee Majors
A technician (with his soldering iron) hit the original Oil & Paper capacitor in the power supply of my Technics 1200 mk2 Turntable. It looks like a snubbing circuit capacitor/noise suppression? rated 0.047uF 450V, Orange Panasonic most likely from the 80's.

His response was it is just cosmetic and there is nothing to worry about. However, I'm not filled with confidence as it is in the AC power section....

Can anyone help me out and can confirm its safe? He hasn't tested it, so I'm not sure how he would 100% know. I am nervous it could fail at some stage....
