VIORE Plasma PDP42V18HA Flashing

Have an odd VIORE PDP42V18HA Plasma Flashing screen. Thought it was bad caps but after a visual inspection no bulging caps or anything burnt so not sure what to check next. I made a video of the flashing and that just a reflection of me in the background not the picture.

Looks like the Z-SUS IPM has popped it....

Thats an LG 42V8/X3 panel there for reference, Lots about those on the Forum....

The caps on my PSU looked perfect. But some of the 10uF had next to 1uF.

Check the output voltages of the PSU.

I thought it was the Z-SUS IPM or are you thinking the PSU?

No I'm not thinking PSU. Just saw the picture and thought I post some info that might be useful.

I would start verifying all voltages that come out of the PSU first.
5Vsb, 5SC, 12Vsc, 9Vsc, 5VCTRL, VS, VA, 24V etc

All good? Then you look further.

Ok tested them all and 1 5volt read 4.48v and there was a 30volt that read 24.4v otherwise right on or real close.
Having trouble where to test VS and VA but I see a sticker of what the voltage should be.

Then the PSU is ok. I have a faulty PSU infront of me, but not the rest of the TV. Can't help any further.

I read that the hybrid modules on the Y Z boards are often faulty. There are fuses to check on these boards....

Well thanks for that at least. Back to maybe the Z-SUS but how to check that??? I did check all fuses first thing and nothing blown anyplace.

I'm not in favor of replacing whole boards. But on the other hand I couldn't help you troubleshooting the other boards because I don't have them nor do I have a schematic of them.

Well crap, changed the Z-SUS board and that did nothing to help so any other ideas out there?

Check the voltage across the bank of red film-caps on both the Y-SUS and Z-SUS.
--They are wired in parallel. These are the energy-recovery caps.

Should be between 90 and 130v.

Tell us what you find.

Hi Alastair E I took a look at the boards and don't see a way to tap on to the caps with a probe as they sit right down on the board. Is there a special way to do this or someplace I can tap into?

Yup--They are difficult....

What you can do is to carefully scrape away where the lead from the cap goes to the board. One side of the caps is earthed anyway, so thats one connection taken care of...

On the Y-SUS, you can measure from the lower end of the SM diode,- D19, just below the IPM heatsink, and chassis.

On Z-SUS you can use-- the outer end of SM resistor--R21 (top left-hand corner of board, near mounting screw) and chassis

Any wildly ranging voltage outside 90-130 would indicate issues with the IPM, the Energy-Recovery or the sustain supply or sustain drive....

Have you dual-beam ocilloscope?

If so, this can be used to compare the waveforms of both drive from Y-SUS and Z-SUS. The Z-SUS should be more or less a square-wave, while the Y-SUS should be that rather odd ramp wave.
--If the Z-SUS wave appears to look like a distorted Y-SUS ramp, but with a flatter top, then this indicates Z-SUS failure--prob IPM, as this is the most common issue with these models.

On the Y-SUS measuring from D19 and ground it hovers around 160v goes a couple volts higher then lower. I just changed the Z-SUS with a known good one so would I really need to check it? No oscilloscope.
