55" Vizio XVT553SV no power, just orange standby after power surge

Hello gentlemen!! I'm working on a Vizio XVT553SV tv. What happened is there was a power surge in the home electrical lines that took place with the tv off. However, the tv no longer turns on. The orange Vizio Standby logo lights up orange and never turns to white when the power button is pressed nor does the tv have any audio or video. I did notice however that when the power button is pressed, the standby led goes from bright to dim orange several times. I currently have the back cover off the tv. I have checked the main fuse on the power board as well as all the small fuses on the mainboard and all were good. I am very comfortable working on boards and soldering but I am at a loss for where to start in diagnosing the problem here. Not sure if the problem lies with the power board or with the mainboard. I would greatly appreciate if you guys could help me along with this.

    Thank you!!

This is most likely a bad main board on these models. If you post some pictures of inside the unit, it may be possible to rule out the other parts so you know it is the main board at fault.

OK, left hand yellow board is your power board.

Right hand green board (with video inputs) is the main board.

On the power board there is a power cable which connects to the main board. Can you get a closer shot of around that cable?

Hi Tom, these pics may not be clear enough but let me know if I need to take better ones. Thanks!

I found someone has some good pics here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...light=XVT553SV

The TV is at my friend's house so I am unable to take new pics at the moment but hopefully the ones I have and the pics from other thread will help.

I would say this is almost certainly a main board fault. Even if the power supply wasn't working, the Vizio light should turn white when the power button is pressed. The same 5V that runs the standby light also turns it white. I've had a few in this same state. The couple I did have with PS issues were at least outputting 5V and the logo would turn white even though nothing happened beyond that.

Seems these get damaged real easy from brief power outtages. Been the story on most of the Vizios I've picked up. Power goes out, TV never works again.

Hi Aaron, that's what I sususpected. Do you think it's worth it to try and diagnose the fault on the mainboard or just replace it?

Eeprom chip would be a likely suspect. You could check all the voltage regulators too. I've heard of people having luck with an eeprom swap but I tried two with no success.

I've got the same problem with a Vizio XVT553SV. Power turns the logo orange but never white. Were you ever able to fix yours?

Vizio D50u-D1 Dead Set No Standby
                        by fharris1977
Hi. I got a Vizio with no power or standby, and won't turn on with remote or button. I checked the voltages on the connector and all read 0.00V or nearly 0(0.050 ON/OFF pin). None of the pins are labeled STB for standby although I do see some 5V pins. Other than the obvious standby led, which isn't coming on, is there a way to check for standby voltage on this PS. I'm trying to see if my problem is the PS or mainboard. Some Vizios I have fixed with no standby led me to think it was the PS but it turned out being the mainboard. Any experience with this set would be greatly appreciated.

Vizio E550i-A0 no power, no standby light
                        by x_orange90_x
I have a Vizio E550i-A0 that will not power on. It also does not display the standby light in the corner. I disconnected the main board cable to see if the backlights would light but they did not (maybe this is normal for this set?). I checked the voltages on the plug and they all read in mV or 0, so there's no voltage there. The fuses are ok, and the voltages of the 450v caps read about 160v. I see no visual damage on either the power supply or main board. I have read online that the main board is usually the culprit in this model, but not getting backlights with the main disconnected makes me...

This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.

Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today....
