I would love to get the service manual, but I cannot locate it.

Does the tv do some sort of test when you plug it in to determine if 12v is being produced by the power supply. Like a brief power up to test the set....or do you think the main board has lost its mind and just thinks there is a problem

Yeah. But when I look for KDL40EX620 it shows no results. My tv has a problem like the kdl46hx800 in this thread

Thank You for the post of the service manual Budm.
Well from what I am reading in the manual page 26, it appears to be the BAL board. (As Mt.Man suggested above)
(I doubt it's the other option "speaker", since I always use external speakers)

It references F3700, IC3700, etc
WHAT DOES this mean?
Does the whole board get replaced, or is this a reference to a component that can be replaced?


BAL Board is Part number A-1778-484A (for mine, the 46HX800)?

Googling the part number all I can come up with is $403

I'm not really sure of the part number in the manual it says A-1778-484A Everywhere else seems to say 906A

Anyone else know of a cheaper source?

The 484A is probably a board number. The part number will be on a barcode label that should be just below the RCA inputs. The first letters/numbers are the part number.

A-1778-906-A is from the Sony service manual for your model. The boards from Sony does not come with software installed. Make sure you have the latest software on hand when you install the replacement board. Also the USB stick must be formatted in FAT32.

Well, concerning my KDL-40EX620, I have replace my main board and no more 3 Blinks when I plug it into the wall. I still don't have a working set. Now when I turn the set on via the power button or remote, it begins to power up shows Sony, (backlights on) and then goes back to protect and flashes the red standby led 10 times. I did a little research and there is some indication that it could be the led driver board or T-Con board....but it is not. I have now replaced both and the set is behaving the same. I also upgraded the Main Board to the latest version by pressing and holding the up arrow button on the remote and powering the tv on via the power button on the side of the television. The software did update (my usb drive flashes a status as it is being accessed). The behavior is also the same after updating the tv (flashes Sony and shuts down, status led 10 flashes). There is only one board left. The power supply. I would sure like to hear if anyone else has seen this and can verify the power board is the issue, as it is the most expensive of the boards.

Darn James, that stinks. I was hoping to hear better news. I found a main for my set for $115, but haven't gotten it yet.

With the original main board the tv starts flashing the status led as soon as it is plugged in

It may be that main board is not an exact compatible replacement. Sony LCDs are very fussy about that.

Well, I think the problem is that I replace the main with a part from a 3D version of the same TV. The TV I have is a KDL-40EX620 and the main board (same part number, supposedly compatible) came from a KDL-40EX720. The 10 blink is indicating an emitter error...duh...no 3D emitter is in my 620.

So, my next question before I order a board from a 620 is....can I trick the main board into thinking that the emitter is present? If I can do that, I may be able to change the model number in the firmware....

Hey James any luck with yours?
I've been leaving mine on. Shut it down by mistake a few times, and it started right back up. I guess it's possible that it was/is a hot/cold issue.

In the meantime, the TV in the bedroom (MEMOREX MLT3221) blew out a cap while it was on last week. Stunk up the room and the picture would come on, and fade out in about 5 secs. Found one bad cap, but replaced two, and it's fixed.

Yeah. I got mine fixed. I just ordered in another main board that came out of the exact model. It fired right up and works great.
