    Capacitance equivalence replacement

    I have a budging capacitor rated at 1500uf 35V I found in a power supply. I don't have any spares to replace it at the moment, but I do have 3 rubycon capacitors rated at 470uf and 35V each. Would putting these three capacitors in parallel be a suitable replacement?

    'fraid not. The voltage across each component remains the same.

      Ignore the above post.

      When in parallel, the voltage remains the same.
      When in series, the voltage gets split between the capacitors, for ex 3 x 1500uF 16v capacitors in series will behave as a single 1500uF 48v capacitor.

      So you can put 3 x 470uF 35v in parallel to get a ~1400uF 35v capacitor.

      Now should you? If you want just to test if it fixes the problem, yeah, go for it.
      For permanent fix, no, it's not a good idea for mainly two reasons:

      * the 470uF are less capable of handling a lot of current and ripple (if the 1500uF was chosen for high ripple capability, these 470uF may go bad fast)

      * using 3 capacitors you'd have to use some wires or leave the leads long - the long will cause some inductance and increase the ESR, which may affect the switching power supply.

        In my experience you should be better off with those three caps, than a swollen capacitor.Suitable is what suits you. Obviously the value of your replacement would be down 90mfd. Your original capacitor is almost certainly reading less than that.Myself, if stuck woulld use them, but only as a temporary measure space permitting.

            Hey Everyone,

            Long time lurker, but I think this is my first time posting.

            Just looking for some assistance on identifying some suitable replacement capacitors for an MSI K7T266 Pro (Ver. 1.0). I just got my hands on two of them actually, both working but one has some visibly bulging capacitors and the other has a few that I can't tell for sure if they're bulging because it's faint at best if they are.

            I'll be honest I don't fully understand much on capacitor spec sheets beyond voltage and capacitance but I can solder like nobodies business so I've...

            Hello everyone.

            I'm having issues with my DJ mixer, and after taking it apart and checking everything out, it seems that I need to replace 2 rotary potentiometers for the filter, and that the PSU has some caps burned. Hopefully these 2 fixes will solve my issues.

            The potentiometers I will just replace (hopefully the repairman I spoke with will indeed send me the spares, in case he doesn't, I'll update here if we can find a suitable replacement), but for the PSU caps I'd kindly ask you forum members, if anyone could help guide me in the right direction.             Hello guys,

            I would like a quite old but still good 800 W ATX PSU to be repaired. The problem was an extremely heavy coil whine coming from the small secondary transfomer on the PCB.

            I desoldered it hoping the references on the upper side would allow me to find a adequate replacement part. Sadly the written references drove me nowhere but to the manufacturer (I-MAG). I sent them a message like a bottle in the see asking them to send me a datasheet of the transformer. And... They responded ! I received a kind of datasheet (see attachment) but my competencies do not allow...

            I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

            I found this nice little description of the conversion:

            It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...

            PS4 controller left stick potentiometer replacement issue

            Hello,

            Not sure if this is the correct section, but I have a PS4 controller that I am trying to fix. It developed stick drift on the left stick and the usual simpler methods did not fix the problem.

            So I went on eBay and ordered some replacement potentiometers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174967976757 is where I got them from.

            I took the green potentiometers off the replacement sticks and soldered them onto the PCB. Assembled the controller and ran some tests. The drifting was somewhat fixed (not fully in center, but way better than before). However,...
