Looking through listings of Aluminum Electrolytics at DigiKey, I see on some caps a Product Status of "Not For New Designs".
I'm replacing some Sacon SZ series caps that have seemingly-impossible specs, meaning that it's hard to find product that meets the specs. Some of the ones that come closest have a status of "Not For New Designs". Can you give some insight about where this idea comes from and what it implies?

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.
I found this nice little description of the conversion:
Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into...

Re: Sacon on Soyo SY-KT600 Dragon Ultra Platinum: Rounded tops, not popped, not leaki
I found the Sacon SZ spec sheet way back when, and stored it away, but I don't see it online anymore, so I'm posting it here now. I wasn't able to read it using Adobe Acrobat reader, due to missing fonts, but I found I was able to read almost all of it using Evince....

Seeking "Ripple Current Confusion" paper by Kemet
Hey everybody.
Trying to understand the meaning of ripple-current specs for capacitors, I've seen references to a paper apparently entitled "Ripple Current Confusion", by Kemet. I've found that the links to the paper are broken, and that it doesn't seem to be on Kemet's site.
Can you post that paper or a good link to it?
Thanks.

Re: Magnavox 37MF337B/37: Picture stretches/shrinks vertically
Thanks for the replies.
R_J, I set the Screen Format to Widescreen as you suggested, and the picture is now stable. So that's good.
Is there a downside to leaving it in Widescreen? I notice that the factory default setting is Widescreen. I expect to use it mainly for over-the-air HDTV, and with a DVD player. I might use it with a computer through VGA or HDMI though.
I wonder how the Automatic screen formatting is supposed to work. Will it depend on the quality of the signal?...

Magnavox 37MF337B/37: Picture stretches/shrinks vertically
The set was dead until I replaced several diodes and 11 CapXon and Liton caps on the power supply board.
So now it's working! ... except sometimes the picture is alternately stretched and shrunk vertically (magnified and demagnified, if you prefer). It may happen several times per minute. Other times it happens not at all.
I didn't change out any components on the logic board, and there are still some CapXons on the logic board.
What would you say is most likely wrong?
Here are some of its specs:
* 720p, 480i/p
* Maximum...

Re: Magnavox 37MF337B/37
See my thread "Choosing diodes for Magnavox 37MF337B/37 power supply repair" https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?p=749365#post749365
My case was very similar to the OP of the present thread. Mfr. date is the same (October 2007). Four large capacitors were bulged, and there were burn marks around the same diodes, although the burning on my board was not as severe. I replaced 11 caps and 6 diodes. Probably 2 or 3 of the diodes I replaced didn't need replacement. But it works now. I put together list of the parts...

Repairing a Magnavox/Philips Model 37MF337B/37 LCD TV. It was making a chirping sound and not booting up.
The manufacture date of the back panel of the plastic case is Oct 7, 2007.
S/N BZ3A0742110835. Power Supply board is version 715T2484-3.
Opened it and found four bad CapXon caps on the power supply board. PS board
has a sticker with bar code reading: ADPF24220R1P and P5PA74151155. There is
at least 34 mm clearance in case I need to use tall capacitors.
This refers to the Service Manual TPM1.OU LA H_16643_001.eps 040507 Part...Last edited by Junkrepair; 05-31-2017, 07:29 PM.

Re: Choosing diodes for Magnavox 37MF337B/37 power supply repair
Sorry, my links above seem to be broken. Trying again:
ZD906: This is a P4KE250A-E3. The board shows obvious heat discoloration a half inch on each side of this TVS.

ZD908: This is a BZX79-B18. There is obvious discoloration a quarter inch on each side of this part.

Re: Choosing diodes for Magnavox 37MF337B/37 power supply repair
The two pictures show the same single light-green cap (C958). But C934 is elsewhere on the board and is the same as C958. They are 5mm x 12mm Lelon RGA 105 degC 25V 47uF without vents---just plain flat tops. I assumed that they are their original color, but IDK. They are the only electrolytics on the board other than the nine CapXons. I guess I might as well replace the Lelons too, or at least order some backups for them.
I've removed the four popped caps but haven't ordered replacements yet. I'll be using...

Re: Choosing diodes for Magnavox 37MF337B/37 power supply repair
Below is a close-up of ZD908 showing the heat discoloration mentioned in the OP.
The discoloration from ZD906 is even worse, but the picture doesn't show it very well. There was a blob of white glue on top of ZD906 and its neighbor D924. I'm hoping for some enlightenment regarding the purpose of that glue. And I wonder whether D924 may have suffered damage by being next to ZD906 when it was hot. I'm also worried about damage to the blue disk capacitor next to ZD906....Last edited by Junkrepair; 05-07-2017, 07:08 AM.

Choosing diodes for Magnavox 37MF337B/37 power supply repair
Hi---
I'm trying to revive a dead Magnavox 37MF337B/37 that was given to me.
I opened it and found (with joy) four popped CapXons (C952, C953, C956, C955) on the PSU board. I also found signs of overheating of a couple diodes. And I've read various posts calling for replacement of other caps and diodes on this board.
I've chosen (with a little help) replacements for all nine CapXons on the PSU board, and I'm fairly confident in those choices.
As for the diodes, do you think I can do better than simply replacing them with the same part...
