had to get longer caps for a tv power board. possibly problematic.

hey guys I got this ILO TV to recap. Already recapped once a year ago by someone else, but judging by the glue around two smaller caps, those two smaller ones were it, also I saw some flux near them.

It had a barely bloated 450/100, and a second 450/100 that was actually kind of burned ontop. It was close to a mosfet heatsink, and when I started to get it unglued, one of the legs literally fell of without much pushing. I looked and the hole had brown dried up lytic shit that somehow, weakened the leg, or eroded the leg. Mouser was out of any 35mm replacements (unless i wanted to wait till 1/22/13) so I had to get a 40mm. Its still close. any idea of how I can help insulate the top?

You can use some electrical tape as insulator, or HV insulating glue.

I don't believe so. I have hot glue. Can I put a big dab of hot glue ontop of the cap? to help deflect heat? I'll search around next time i'm at frys

Hot glue tends to break off, it is very brittle. You can try it, or you can deal with the fact that ~5mm requires approx 7kV to arc over in ~60% RH air, so it is unlikely to fail on a PSU dealing with 400V max.

i'm not 100% on what you are talking about, but if you mean electric arc, thats not what i'm afraid of. I'm afraid of constant heat from the sink slowly heating up that cap, the cap top is literally about ~4-5mm from the sink, and when I say the old one was burnt, I mean from heat

Then an insulator will make it worse.

What kills caps is not so much external heat, but internal heat from ripple current. The original didn't fail due to the heat externally, but due to the excessive ripple from being undersized.

A good cap will be fine.

Here is a technical document from Panasonic Industrial that gives useful information about ambient temperature effects on electrolytic caps. One important conclusion from this document is that ambient temperature and proximity to heat producing components are important considerations pertaining to the life expectancy of electrolytics. Use Techniques of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Replacement caps for Samson Resolv studio monitor 65A Amp board.
                    by black6host
                    Good day!

I have a Samson Resolv studio monitor that has no sound output. I've opened it up and found two caps that are bulging on what I believe to be the power supply section of the amplifier board. The board is marked Resolv 65A AMP V1.2. The caps in question are YUSCON, 2200uF, 35V, 85C temp and have markings of RA(P) and are 16mm x 25.5mm tall. I've attached the schematic and the caps in question are C5 and C6. I'm assuming they are low esr caps. I've tested both caps and they test low uF, nowhere near 2200uF.

I'm going to replace the caps and I'll be the first...

                    by Noodneek
My 3.5 years old monitor (BenQ SW2700pt) started to black out for 1-2 sec every minute or so, it was doing this even with PC disconnected from it. I searched online and read that it's probably aging capacitors and there's a workaround to lower the brightness.

I lowered it from 100 to 65% and it indeed helped, but after a couple of months the issue returned... I continued to lower the brightness, but it helped only for a couple of hours at most, then I needed to lower it further... Turning the monitor off and waiting for it to cool down also helped for a short time, after which it...
