Sony KDL-46XBR4 13 blinks

There is a KDL-46XBR4 sony lcd tv for sale for 100$ and I was wondering if it is worth the fix. The problem is that the tv does not turn on and the standby LED flashes 13 times. From the service manual it says the problem is caused by the "BALANCER" What does that mean exactly?

Would the problem be within the CCFL lamps? and I would need to replace them? (The guy also said he would also give me another free cracked screen sony 46" TV (different model but same size screen) for me to use the CCFL from. Would this solution work?)

Or is the problem with the inverter board and I should replace the inverter board. (looking online the inverter board is pretty cheap (10-20$ range)

Balancer board is the inverter boards on the LCD panel, not the DF2 or DF3 power boards the drive the panel.

Is the post on ebay an inverter board? It doesnt look one to me.

i was not sure mt.man says this is a power board? that drives the panel. i was just searching for balancer issues as i have never heard of it and came up with this ebay link? so not sure probably a incorrectly worded ebay item?

It generates the HV (3kV or so) and distributes it to the ballast/balancer board - which ensures each bulb gets the same current.

It is usually built into the PSU. I guess the reason they may have separated it is so that they can make one using an LED screen which requires around 90 to 300V for series LED strings. Odd design choice though as it increases the cost.

That's probably due to the tab bonding problem affecting lots of 46" Sony TVs.

My question hasnt been answered yet. Would the problem be with the ccfl lamps or a bad invertet board?

Probably CCFL or balancer. Bad inverter board is rare for Sony. But what do you expect us to guess without tests, measurements, analysis? We are not magic, part of the knack about TV repair is taking a chance on repairing a set. If you always do what you know you will not learn any new stuff!

Well just bought the set itself, it actually can turn on with the menu and everything however itll turn back off to standby and with the blinking light. I'll open it up tomorrow and see what I have to work with =)

So just opened it up, and heres whats in it. I don't even know where to start! There are boards that I don't recognize. Which would be the balancer board? I'm about to disassemble everything down to the CCFL lamps and check those. I just learned that the "balancer" board is just the typical inverter board. Sony just calls it a balancer.

Been reading about the 13 light blink error online a bit and they all would say to replace the LCD panel itself if replacing the inverter (balancer) board does not work. However reading other articles, they say it is most likely a damaged CCFL lamp and the entire LCD panel should be replaced. No where mentions replacing the CCFL inside the LCD panel. Unless its not possible because there is actually no way to get into the CCFL lamps but I have not confirmed this. My guess is there is a damaged CCFL lamp.

My question is, Is it possible to replace a CCFL lamp within the LCD panel? If its possible I don't find much information about it online, is it very difficult to replace a CCFL lamp?

Yes, you can disassemble the panel, but have to be very careful not to break it.

Hmm nice find, I just recently sold that same Samsung after a a simple capacitor fix. Saw the same tv that would power on but shut off, the guy said it was a backlight problem, it's still been on Craigslist for a week for 100$ i might just pick it up now seeing that fix

Anyway the test points seem to be different where would I put the probes to check for ac?

I was measuring all the resistances of each transformer. All measured around 2400 ohms but the one i circled measured 0.04 ohms, however its a different transformer than all the others. The one I circled is labeled: 886-Y7E3, and all the other transformers are labeled 910-Y7E5. Would the circled transformer be short circuited? I measured out of circuit and got the same readings as well.

That is a current transformer, different to the rest. It measures the power consumption of the backlight tubes as a whole. Not sure why, maybe some kind of lifetime balancing to increase the current as the bulbs get dimmer over time. Either way, it is unlikely to be the fault. I would expect 0 ohms.
