    Sony KDL-37m400 Relay Click...... Nothing

I have a Sony 37m400 that was apparently getting wet. Person that asked me to look at it said it just died. It is obvious by looking at the main board and water stains running down the front that it had gotten wet several times over a long period of time.

Only signs of life are a clicking relay when attempting to power on and a standy light. I found a diode that's questionable, and I also would like to know what is at location Z1 just north of the main fuse on the power board, it tests open whatever it is.

The questionable diode is at D950

Best not to use a tv in the shower!

Are we supposed to be able to see a Z1 on the picture If you mean the black rectangular box with white writing? it looks like a relay - try googling the part number.

Why is the diode questionable? Use diode test on your meter and post result.

What happened to this:Re: 42" Spectrincq no power.
It would be good to update the thread.

Diode test is 1070 one way and 230 the other,

Z1 is just above and left of the relay it looks like a ceramic disc capacitor but I don't think it is, guessing it has to do with surge protection.

I'll update the other thread, sorry about that. Just gave up, in over my head I guess.

      Thanks

            That is a good diode.

I still don't know where it is or what it looks like, but see my other post. A clear focused picture would help where I can read and see the pcb designation.

Yes I thought a Z designation would be a Zener but both the green disk and the orange disk with a sleeve on look like Thermistors.
If you are talking about the orange disk with the sleeve on take the sleeve off and see if there are any part numbers on it.

tvr 14621 i guess its a varistor. I'm guessing its normally open, is this correct?

Where do I go from here?

Can you get some decent pics as retiredcaps asked. - he wont ask again.
Is the orange blob near the connector on the right hand side a fuse?

There are also fuses on the main board - I cant see them but can see the labeling

Ok, put it in broad daylight to get some pics. I tested some voltages, the standy was right on at 3.3v the unreg13v was very low .6v and reg12 was similar at .9v. don't know what that means but I thought I'd provide that info.

Thats much better as long as we dont need to see the part of the main board in the shadow. We aso need the backs of the boards.

Still cant see the fuses - can you- The label says F400 or 4000 5A24V at the bottom left under the wires.

Another is on the left halfway up F7000? 3.15A 24V

Ok, I unplugged the tcon and got a little life out of the inverter board, the backlight would at least flash little. I heard a little whining, tried a few more times and it stayed on a little longer each time, but only briefly.

You can see plenty oh crud in several spots. Do SMD fuses leave something behind when they blow? I can't really find them.

Selldoor, I cant really figure out where the heck the fuses are on the front the arrow points right for the connector.

There's a lot of corrosion on some of those leads on the board. It must have got really wet. How did that happen, did owner notice water?? If the damage is too severe, you will likely need a new main board, just hope the others are okay.

Ok - maybe they use different fuses depending on what application the board is for but I think it likely that the item I have marked is a fuse
does it have a letter or number on it.

The TV was in the basment and he claims the water traveled in through the cable and dripped down on the tv. Must have been that way a while cause it is pretty corroded. I am not ready to give up on it so any troubleshooting help I can get is very appreciated. There is a transistor that has a kind of ooze look to it. How would I go about testing it.

I would say clean up all the pins with a scourer then resolder anything which looks corroded. The LCD may also have been damaged by the water, someone else on this forum had a problem with water damage.

Re: Sony KDL-37m400 Relay Click...... Nothing

Man - its a miracle it switches on!! I missed these pics when I went for the fuse.Did think about water in via the cable as tuner box it goes into looked rusty.

We are going to need more members to look at this as I am not sure how to proceed.
First thing is to get clear close pics as possible of each corroded area.
Then try and clean the corrosion off - my first instincts would be WD40 and a fine
toothbrush but I dont know about the wd40 - perhaps IPA would be better?
Once it is clean then retake the photos - you need the first ones in case any bits drop off!! We can try but suspect a replacement board will be the answer.
What are the other boards like underneath.

                                      EDIT
                                      Tom beat me to it

Ok, cleaned up everything I could find that looked affected and it not will turn on with tcon plugged in and even gives me a BRAVIA logo but turns off in about 3 seconds every time.
